The Primary Upgrades
Pleasentries: Hi, you are looking at a proud owner of an FC!
Anyhow, I just bought a 1987 rx-7 for 1400. It has an aftermarket exashaust (it's early for me, so... never mind the spelling), from what i've been told and can hear. However i'm not sure if it's a suitable application for it (i don't know if it's helping or hindering, and niether did the prior owner). The engine Was replaced a little while ago (i'd have to go get the paper work but I think mybe less than 20,000 miles). It's been through some abuse as a primered hood and a few dents on the drivers side can attest to.
First question: What would be the best exsauhst system for this car (ie: sound and hp increase-- for warn my original intention of this car was to make it a sleeper with an electronic y cut off valve)?
Next question: what should be the first modifications i do to it? IE should i save up for a turbo? Tear apart my engine and put in new rotors/seals? or just go simple 'till i'm rich and put on a cold air intake?
Is there anything that I should watchout for when looking at after market components for this vehicle?
And my last question: I've noticed that the shifter is some-what loose and i have to hold the shift **** rather forcably to get it in gear. I am planing on puting a short shifter on in the near future, would that remedy the problem? or would more information be needed to tell?
(i'm not so much worried about the looks right now. In fact I don't plan on doing much with it until after the winter months.)
Thanks All!

You got a used car that is quite old and by your observation been through a bit of abuse. Before you go modding crazy you ought to give your car a thurough inspection to make sure nothing is prone to failure like bushings suspension and driveline. I would takea look at the following before you do anything.
Pulsation damper-Mine had a screw loose and was leaking fuel. Overlooking this will inevitably cause a car fire since the exhaust and fuel system are on the same side of the car.
Rubber Bushings- Rubber gets old and cracks. All my exhaust hangers are cracked or stretched beyond any useful support. All my spring seat rubber is gone or barely hanging on and some of my bushings are on their way out

The (arguably) best exhaust, besides going custom, is Racing Beat. (www.racingbeat.com)
The shifter is loose because your shifter bushings are worn. :-D

on the side note, get a full maintinance on the car. thats what you SHOULD do when u buy a fc or anycar cuz u cant trust the previous owner. like me for example, i got a 10th ae and it was ******* clean so i didnt really do maintinance but later mazda told me that the oil hasnt beeen changed in a while.....

1st answer: rb exhaust, rsr, fujitsubo. if ur gonna get everything(downpipe) i suggest u get better injectors, port ur wastegate, fuel pump, better ecu.
2nd answer: a basic mod that u can do to get easy hp is to do a TID custom mod on ur intake, get a 43degree angle pipe as ur intake pipe and get like a aftermarket filter. thats the 1st thing i did to my fc. not only it sounds alot nicer, i have better throttle response. ur car will sound like it has a bov if u shift past 4000 rpm. this mod is for turbo models so if urs is n/a, scratch that suggestion
last answer: juss get better bushings den ur shifter should be fine. my friend had the same problem but got mazdatrix to replace bushings and now it shifts fizzine!

Regarding the turbo.....most folks here will tell you to swap out the drivetrain if you're going to add a turbo. The stock drivetrain is adequate, but won't hold up to as much as abuse as the stock turbo II drivetrain. You'd also want a new clutch to handle the extra power.
Anyways, welcome to the forum!
Thanks for all the respones. I have already planned to do the run through for worn parts such as bushings and what not. But I'm looking at upgrades down the line. So thank you for all your help and for telling me about the shifter bushings. I'll deffinatly look into those too.
Unfortunatly I'm still trying to find an auto zone or the likes around where i live so i can pick up a hayes manual (anyone know of a good online one?).
as a side note I plan on keeping a good documentation with this car, so expect to see lots of pictures when i do start to work on it. also are there any stores or online locations that i could check for an engine swap? I was checking out gspeedcorp when i was looking at getting a toyota (mr2, 87 corolla), but they never have any roto-motors

Its good to have a haynes manual too. Its better for some stuff. Generally, the place is going to have to order it in. Most parts stores don't carry them in stock for our cars.
