Question Power Steering Removal?

I am prescently trying to make some IC pipes for my T2, i am having some difficultys as i have a FD manifold fitted, Gtr Type IC and the Power steering pump fitted.

I have seen alot of cars with the Power steering removed, which realy helps with the space problem.

Basicly what i would like to know is my car has 225/18 tyres on the ft will the steering be over heavy at low speed, would i need a new rack? and would i get better feed back whilst driving?

Thanks

got pictures of your engine bay ? curious about your RHD setup

some guys are swapping NON PS steering rack in there to make it clean, but u might find how-to for removing just pump and doing some kind of bypass on hoses...

Okay... I just did the PS removal and manual rack install two weeks ago. The steering is nice. Super slow speed manuevering takes a bit of muscle, but not much At slow speeds (5-10 mph) it's much easier. Where are you getting your manual rack from? I got mine from a wrecking yard. Watch for torn tie rod boots and give the tie rods themselves a good movement check. I had one that was stuck, but I just pulled the one off the PS rack. Mark the threads with paint if you have to do this so it's easier to see where to stop. You should get an alignment done afterwards too! Damn... I think I got a bit too involved in my response It's definately worth it, though!

Oh, yeah... removing the PS rack was a bit of a pain (mostly because of the hard pipes in the system), but it wasn't that bad. Removing the PS and installing the manual took a better part of the day, but we were taking smoke and drink breaks alot!

So its not too heavy? its just i have 225/18" tyres on and wanted an opinion before i went and pulled it all off.

The other thing is did the NA's have power steering? are they easy to get hold of?

Thanks.

Some of the NA's had power steering. The higher end models like the GXL I think. As far as 18 inch rims with 225's? Well, that tire is a bit wider and would therefore have more surface area in contact with the ground... thus providing more resistance when trying to turn. I don't think, though, that it would be all that hard to do. I say go for it! It's all a matter of preferance, but I personally like getting more feedback throught the wheel, makes me feel a bit more in control. I do alot of slow speed manuevering (as do we all) and I don't really mind it at all.

1991 Coupe of mine has P/S. Just the Sport I think was the only US model to not get P/S. I have since removed P/S, just removed the pump. Not too bad, but getting into tight parking spaces can be difficult, but do-able.

Ok so if i pull the belt of my car will that give me an Idear of what its like?, its just i was told a power steering rack with the pump off will make it very Heavy, you would have to move the Power steering rams as well as the wheels?

Does this sound right or am i geting fed S**t?

It'll give you some idea what its like but thats all it will be, just some idea. A manual rack will be easier to turn due to its higher ratio. I've got 185/70/14's on my car (pretty cheesy I know) and they are VERY EASY to turn, I can do it with 1 hand at a stop. Therefore I can't imagine it would be all that hard, just as long as you install a manual rack. The hardest part about the whole job I think will be finding the manual rack.

I just answered this question on the 3rd Gen Forum. I removed my P/S about 2 months ago, along with my A/C. I have 235/40 17's on the front...lots of tread up front. I also had a smaller(290 mm) momo steering wheel. With that steering wheel, it made turning difficult, but manageable. It was difficult backing out of parking tight parking spaces, but that's it. When I went to a 320 mm steering wheel from Subaru, it was SO much easier. It almost feels easier than my momo WITH powersteering.

Bottom line...If you have muscles AND a larger or stock steering wheel...You'll be fine.

If you've got the cash you can order a complete manual steering rack from British Victoria. I THINK they're under $300. Not exactly cheap, but they are new (or re-conditioned). If you get the rack from a junkyard you can order (from BV) any replacement parts you need. I agree with jspecracer7... don't run out and get one of those small diameter chain link steering wheels. heh heh... imagine one on a rex
