i want to get rid of my power steering, would any 2nd gen manual steering rack fit a 87 turboII.

I don't know the answer to your question, BUT...You don't have to put in a manual steering rack. I removed my PS in my 90 NA, all I did was connect the two lines going into the PS pump together after removing the pump. It won't be quite as easy to turn then with a manual rack, but I don't having any problems turning the wheel.

I too removed my Power Steering from my 88GXL... the cheap way. I took off my belt and the p/s fuse. I also took off my A/C Belt too. I tried, but I can't figure out how to remove the console. I wanna lift that whole space as I've seen many people do before but I don't know where to start. All that open space... less weight and a nice, snuggly cozy spot for a T-88? hmm... interesting.

If you replace it with a manual rack I think it is quite easier on turning than a unpowered powersteering rack.

I just changed to a manual rack like 2 weeks ago.

1. just taking the belt off is bad, the rack still wants the juice but the pump isnt going.
2. you can cap the lines from the rack but I dont remember wich ones or how. Do a search, alot of people have done it.
3. Go with the manual rack, it is easier to turn than removing the PS belt.
4. If you go manual, the send/receive lines from the pump to the rack are a BITCH to get off, and make sure you have the passenger side mounitng bracket from the manual rack, it is a different size from the PS one, the other side is the same on both racks.

My concern before removing my belt was because of Xentrix reason #1 that it is bad for the rack as it want's the juice but it's not getting it. IF I drive without the power steering how bad will this kill my rack? I may decide to put it back on maybe in the future if I sell it or sell it to my bro.

I removed mine a couple months ago, and I mean the whole system. THe lines are a bitch so I cut them off and capped them. No probs at all and its not that hard to steer. But I didnt removed the fuse, hmmmmm, should I? what will it help?

someone might need it one of these days..
the pain for me was removing the condensor...

takin out hte pump dosent kill the rack. the rack still turns the same way, and if you take the pump out right there will still be fluid in there. the only difference is that you are using your power to steer and not the pump. Granted a manual rack is easier to steer, but ****, its not hard at all, its a little pain just at a stand still.

Just exercise a little. I've taken my belt off and have had it this way for the last 9 months or so. If it gets easier when the lines are capped off and not trying to fight the offline pump, then it shouldn't be a problem at all. Right now with just the line off, after a few mph it isn't so bad.

Don't just cap the lines - connect them together bypassing the pump - this allows the rack to remain full of fluid for lubrication and allows the fluid to circulate w/o causing extra resistance in the rack.

Make sure to plug the cooling line with a bolt or something. Just connect the 2 lines that go to the PS pump with somethin, not too bad.
