Power Steering Questions

Okay, this has been bothering me for quite some time now simply because I can't figure it out.

The Power steering pump on my 87 GXL has TWO high pressure lines and one return line on it. This is pretty normal as far as the RX7's go, but EVERY other power steering setup I've seen and worked on only has one high pressure output from the pump and one return line. So why are there two on the RX7's? Does the rack and pinion not have a valve spool and sleeve in it to direct the flow of pressure to the appropriate side during turning? Or does the pump just use the two lines to put out enough flow to satisfy the steering rack that it normally couldn't if only one line was used? Do they have different operating pressure ratings? I couldn't even begin to guess why they would, but the fact still remains that they use different sized fittings in order to not get them confused or mismatched, so there must be some difference. I just can't figure out why it needs two to begin with.

Anybody else have any clues/ideas to help me figure this out so I can sleep better at night?

Basically I need to know why there are two high pressure lines, and not one. Particularly if they have different pressures that they operate at... that's the most critical info.

well the manual isnt that descriptive on this section but from what i see one is the main fluid pressure, and the other is the sub fluid pressure.

for the main should be at: 7,848 kPa (80kg/cm2, 1,138 psi) at idle rpm (725-775)

for the sub it should be at: 294 kPa (3kg/cm2, 43 psi) min.

just in case check this out:

good luck,

Thanks for that info!

Now, why on earth does the rack need a sub fluid pressure line? If I was going toa different setup of a PS pump, could I get away with mating the two pressurized lines and running them to the single high pressure outlet on the PS pump?
