power steering questions

well i like my power steering and all...but i took the belt off today to see what it was like without PS while i was putting the belt back on i tightened it too much and broke the ps pulley adjustment bolt...so i said to hell with it. i might as well just remove the pump and make it into a manual steering rack. so does anyone know of a write up or how-to on taking the pump out and converting the ps rack to manual? thanks

Broken adjustment bolt

Just replace the bolt. Shouldn't be more than $5 from any wrecking yard.

The Power Steering ratio is tighter than regular steering. So, will always be heavy. And to replace the Rack and Pinion would be major effort unless you happen to have the engine out at the time.

To replace the bolt would be about 20 minutes labor time.

My 2 cents. Good luck how ever you decide to proceed.

I hear you on that particular low grade bolt. I broke It twice. Sure enough, I bought It at the dealer for $1.87 can. Ironically enough, I'm thinking of removing the whole assembly.

LOL - I broke that bolt 3 weeks ago.. Pully was already kinda tight, so no biggie. I need to get a new one though..

KEEP YOUR POWERSTEERING. I had no PS in my 86 and it just sucked.. LOL - Or, maybe I'm a wuss..

p.s.,. the PS rack has a tighter turning radius than the manual rack. Probably want to get that rack if your take it out.

I guess we are not the only ones. I guess thats why the Dealer had this bolt In stock. Thats a first for having It In stock besides Spark Plugs or Oil Filter.

Not correct. Replacing racks ( PS one for non-PS one ) is easy job for afternoon.....all u have to do is loosen your front sway bar, everything else stays in place...

done it.....and will do one swap again tomorrow ;o)

Now, all you need Is a Manual. I'm going with that setup soon.
