Power steering pump not working... HELP???

Hello,

Love it or hate it, the 350 RX7 has power steering.. In theory! Rppelaced the manual rack with power, got the pump and bracket in there, got the lines all hooked up, got the pump mounts and the belt to the pulley.... But still no power.

Now, Im sure these electrical harnesses coming off of the pump play a part in this process, maybe activating the pump to switch on or something... Anyone know how to trick it on? Or, am I doing something else wrong, any help you can give me in this process will be much appreciated.

I will give a FREE Gen 2 , 2 front wheel camber kit to the first person that enlightens me on how to get this baby to finally power steer.......

stock PS pump is speed sensitive. in other words, it has an ECU input that tells it how "hard" to pump. how to replicate that sounds like a pretty tough one to me.

You could probably trick it into running full on all the time, but the 7 PS system is really overpowered, and it would suck at speed.

My recommendation is to just eliminate the PS. I personally did it to mine just bc i like the feel better without it. Or you could get a PS pump from something else.

Maybe I can manually move the valve or whatever it is that mechanically adjusts the pump, to on, or a nice middle ground....?

wow, a new manual rack top replace my broken one is only $229, that may be the way to go. oh well. I will take the electrical part of the PS pump apart today to see if I can use a manual choke cable type set up to set it to on or off maybe, one way for freeway, one way for in town use. If not, I'll just put a new manual rack in this weekend.

manual racks have a different gear ratio, and arent hard to turn. plus, a extra 150 lbs isnt that big a deal...what if you have a fat chick in the passenger seat? be about the same as that...lol

Non rotary engine conversions do not belong in the 2nd gen technical section, But rather in the other engines section. This thread should have been posted there.

But it appears that you are using a Mazda power steering pump, which requires a Mazda power steering CPU, which requires a speed signal input from the Mazda gauge speedo, and the engine speed from the trailing coils (or in the case of a S5 engine speed sensing power steering, just the trailing coil).

So since you don't have trailing coils, you may need to use what every device you are driving the tach on the dash with. Of course if you are not using the Mazda tach, again you are SOL and should have posted this thread in the other engines conversions area.

I was asking about the pump only, not the motor, got the information I needed. Actually it turns fine and I would debate whether the 350 takes up a whole extra 150 pounds! Steered just fine and did just dandy last autocross season using a unpowered power steering rack too! I had a broken manual steering rack, which I did not know was a mess until I put it in, but I think a manual rack would be OK, I will update soon. tomorrow, I will take the cover off the power steering section that has the electronic harness going into it. If Im feeling extra rednecky and there's a possibility of manually moving the valve from within the cabin, I may do that, heh. I have the manaul rack delivered to the shop today as well.
