Power Steering conversion?

hey has anyone ever added power steering to a non power steering car? i am assuming that you would need the pump and bracket, lines, steering rack, and i believe that the power steering has its own control module under the dash, any one know anything on this please help.

Are you going to be giving away that manual rack. I'd like it. Hehe...Hmmmm ive never INSTALLED power steering, always removed it. There is two plugs that connect to the back of the pump...I wonder what they do.

I am unsure of the control module under the dash, but everything else I know you need. At first I thought that the steering shaft had to go as well cause I thought it was longer, but it can stay. Im in the process of doin a trade right now, but I havent heard from my 'trade' buddy yet. Im going manual, and I need the rack, and the linkage between the rack and the steering shaft.

If he doesn't reply, or doesn't want it, im just going to plug up the line holes and leave it. I think the only difference between the power steering and manual steering other than the pump and lines is the linkage or whatever you call it between the rack and shaft. The PS setup has more turns from left to right than the manual, and im sure its just the linkage that causes this. The rack looks identical to me, other than the banjo bolt holes for the lines.

Yea I forgot about those, this pretty much convinced me just now that there is a part under the dash or in the ecu case that controlls the power steering to some degree..

oh, hey. I was waiting to hear from you. lol. I'll PM you now.

as for the computer control...I was thinking that was in the ECU? I remember seeing some stuff in the wiring diagram for ps....

but can anyone clarify this? I don't want to get power steering and have it not work. lol.

Makes you wonder exactly what the PS cpu part controlls exactly... Im thinking it will work either way, but maybe at high rpms it is way to sensitive? or overheats and the ecu controlls a valve that shuts off or controlls the amount of fluid pressure to the rack???

The PS computer is under the dash, immediately to the left of the steering column. It's an aluminum, box about 4 inches square and 1 inch thick. It has a multi-pin connector going to it, about 2 or 3 inches across. If that connector isn't there, then the wiring for the PS computer isn't there, either, which is going to be a problem.
