I am building my S4 NA this winter. What is your power band on streetport? Big streetport? Bridge port? I am a piston engine guy. I like torque. I know rotarys and torque do not go together, that is why I want to know power band, so I can know how much to port it. Don't worry I am not a dumb noob. I have built porsche 911 engines for the last 8 years. I want some intelligent answers. Please help!

 

I've got a moderate streetport on mine. I never drove it stock to compare it, but I don't have any problems at all with the powerband...and when i raced a stock s4 with it I won by a lot.

1-3K is dead, good for cruising only. 3-4K it is starting to wake up and be responsive, but doesn't feel powerful. After 4K the power rises strongly up to about 6K and holds to 7.

I have a mild streetport and there is basically nothing below 3k but once you hit 3.5k-4k the car screams.

 

I put 172rwhp to the wheels with s4 rotors and manifolds and the car really like the 5 to 7k range. that is with a streetport, header, and other stuff

 

that is not a bad as I thought. Mine shuts down at 6500. Anyway to get rid of the pesky rev limiter?

 

N/A FCs are rev limited at 6500RPMs? I thought their redline was around 8k?

 

Stock redline is 7k for s4 , 8k for s5 (and 7k for all turbos). The rev limiter is around 8.5k on both models. Anything higher than that and you need a flywheel scatter shield.

As for the power band, there is enough power for regular driving below 3k. Its not like a big V-8, but its still reasonable. It picks up around 3.5-4k and goes to about 6-6.5k stock, and a good port job will extend the range about 1k. If you use the s5 manifold it also extends the power range about 1k, so 7-7.5k stock, 8k+ with a street port.

 

So if mine is cutting out at 6500, I have a running issue correct? I have not checked the plugs, wires look new. Never checked the timing. The car runs like a raped ape till then.

 

It's a possibility. I'd check everything, just to make sure. BTW, any pics of your car?

 

Well, I got rid of my upper RPM miss. The p.o. put a walbro race pump in it, and left the stock fpr. So I got an ebay fpr and it runs fantastic. I can now set off the buzzer to tell me to shift. I still have the obligatory 3800 miss, but I am going to take care of that tomorrow and re-ground the ecu. I found out something else though. As soon as I hit 6500 it turns into a fog machine. Blue oil-filled smoke. It doesn't smoke any other time, so that sucks. I was planning on rebuilding it this winter anyways. Oh yeah here is some pics. Don't tell me the front end is wasted, I already know.

I have power til about 7600 according to the butt dyno, this is not just one run, this is months worth of feeling and making minor adjustments to the SAFC and timing. Power sometimes drops off at 6000. I have to figure out why.

 

The p.o. parked it on a hill and did not set the parking brake. It jumped out of gear and went down a big hill and went through a city park, then wedged itself between a couple of trees. It went about a mile on its own (good alignment) and missed all the big trees. I would of loved to see it, just to see an rx-7 driving itself. Anyways, thats what happened.

i like the mustang rims, it looks good like that, fix the front and port it, then you'll be good.

BTW, Ive got an S5 vert with the VDI, and it makes power from 4800-7200 about. All stock with the exception of a K&N drop in.

 

my car has some decent power from about 2.5k and is a beast around 4-7k. rarely go over 7k cos i'm way over the speed limit

 

At least its not a convertible. I mean it would be fine if I had a boyfriend.... I'm sure he would love it.

WTF?! Why do you have such a problem with people using inexpensive, good looking, perfectly fitting wide 17" wheels?!

They're 17x8's, which is a pretty nice size for fitting decent rubber under the FC, they're the perfect 30mm offset for that size, they're not too heavy at about 20lbs (not bad for street use), they're cheap, they're readily available, they're durable, and I think they look pretty good. Without the center caps most people don't even realise that they're Mustang wheels. In fact I've even had to tell Mustang owners that that's what they are. Lots of FC owners use them, including me. So please shut up before you go and get yourself banned.

 

I picked up my car for $300. It runs and drives just fine. I didn't have to spend a bunch of money to have fun. Hence the PBR mod. Is it a mod? No. Is it funny? Yes. I am having fun with my car. Not trying to get brownie points from the gods of rx-7s. I buy my cars cheap, fix em' up and drive the **** out of them. Here are some of my previous cars, and you can decide if I am a ricer.
