NY possible alternate alternator

i stumbled across something at work the other day. the mechanic that works in the next bay was changing an alternator on a maxima. i looked at the old core and thought wow this looks a lot like my FD alternator. the mounting points look very similar and the plug IS identical, and it happens to put out 110 amps. i know 10 more amps isn't much but it got me thinking, what other alternators might work? i looked through all the other possible candidates with VQ nissan motors. the 350Z, maxima, altima, all use the 110 amp model. but then i saw that there were 2 different alternators for the 04-08 pathfinder, one puts out 110 and the other puts out 130 amps! it is a hitachi unit, probably higher amps for more equipped models.
i haven't had a chance to take any pics, since it is hard to yoink an alternator out of a customer's car. i have yet to verify but if somebody might want to see if it might work then we all have an alternative. i don't know if the shaft diameter will match up, or if the mounting ears might need some shimming but it looks damn similar.
another question is the wiring. will it need to be wired like the S4-S6 conversion? i can get a copy of the FSM at work.
Any thoughts?

Psha. I have a 130 amp alternator on my S5 right now. It wasn't plug and play, but it works just fine. The project is really in what I would call preliminary stage of development, but it is working pretty well for the first attempt.

When I get it completely finished and am satisfied with the project, I will pub a how-to.

I am the mother of invention. Or some such thing as that.

When I get finished and am satisfied with the fitment, belt length, pulley alignment etc, I will post up a how to. Hopefully this weekend, if work permits.

yea the taurus alternator is a popular upgrade for mustangs. it is big as hell, but the pathfinder alternator looks like it will plug right into a S5-S6 harness. the pathfinder alternator also looks like it will bolt in with less modification than the taurus alternator. of course i don't have hard facts just yet, i am just comparing my friends mustang by memory.

My S5 alt has a Mitubishi logo in the casting. I bet some Mitsu alts would be pretty easy fit as well.

There are lots of different Taurus alternators. Some are HUGE and some are just right.

Those Nissan alternators might be a good alternative, but they will be pricey. You can buy remans and tested-good-used Taurus alts pretty cheaply.

Mitsubishi and, Nip and Denso both make alternators for lots of cars and trucks. if yours has the casting then some one probably bought it at a parts store like auto zone or kencts.
