Pointers on good power gains on S5 N/A?

i just bought a 91 GXL and i was wondering what some good modifications are to increase power. the car already has a jdm cat-back system on it and lightweight flywheel, and racing clutch. What are some good ways to increase power without spending over 1k?

this was a good investment. They now sell this for around 1100 dollars. It dropped the g-teh 1/4 time about 1.4 seconds from a race-piped stock exhaust system(removed cat)

While the "Powah" and I debate every once in a while, I do have to stick up for him here. JDM gets used like Xerox or Fedex. Many people buy something becasue its advertised as "jdm". this seems to have been a selling point when you bought your car. There are very few parts that are differnt between the Japan and US market. Most have to do with emissions and right hand drive.

EDIT aww he beat me to it. Mine is the ricer reality check version though.

JDM= Japaneese domestic market

Get that? JDM is nothing. Its a term used to make ricers jiz their pants. They think JDM is better somehow when most of the time with FC's its just about the same. If you really have a JDM exhaust then its stock and no better than the USDM mufflers it came with. Get that?

what theyre saying is...

get an exhaust system! A straight pipe or high flow cat with some aftermarket mufflers.
Racing Beat is quiet and sounds great.
Corksport is cheaper, single, and sounds nice but is very loud.
Take your pick

Sorry I was harsh but I really hate all the things on ebay having to have JDM on them. Its really annoying.

A street port is when you rebuild your engine and you have an engine builder or you can do it yourself but what you do is you "port" which is enlarging the intake and exhaust ports so that your engine can flow more air in and out of itself. It allows for more power to be made. Its the most basic of ports which is just enlarging and smoothing the stock style ports. More aggressive styles are Bridge ports, J-bridge ports and peripheral ports. You can learn some about this at www.mazdatrix.com Check it out its informative. There are also some good sites and links in the FAQ threads at the top of this page.

To put it simply, it allows more air to enter the combustion chamber, if done right creates more useable power in the upper rpm ranges, especially in conjunction with exhaust/ intake mods...that help?

a streeport can not be had for less than $1k or without rebuilding the engine. intake, exhaust, intake manifold porting, weight reduction, and if you still have money, an SAFC will be your best bets to make power.

Here would be my FC shopping list if I had a thousand dollars. This is assuming that your FC is stock or close to it. In order...

K&N cone filter w/ cold air box. Won't do much by itself, but will help with other mods. 40 bucks for filter, about 40 to build the box.

Exhaust. If you have emmissions to deal with, get a good high flow cat into a good corksport, Racing Beat, or other good catback. If you don't have emmissions, use a downpipe and presilencer. For the ultimate, you can go true duals but that's expensive...

But before you do ANY of that, give that car a tune-up. New sparkplugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter (if you don't get the cone filter yet) 02 sensor, adjust your TPS (do a search for that one) and so forth.

A properly running stock FC will run just as fast if not faster than a modded FC that runs like ****.

Since you have to pass emissions, I would go with these mods:

Bonez High Flo Cat $350
(single cat with pre-silencer NOT the dual one -- www.rx7.com)

Engine Tune Up $150
-- spark plugs, wires, belts, filters, etc
-- Make sure the 6 PI and VDI work!
-- If you have to take the Lower Intake Manifold (LIM) off, then install pineapple racing sleeves available from Corksport ($50) (use green loctite).

K&N Intake with Cool Air Box $100
-- do it yourself or buy one

SAFC (Look for a used one in the For Sale section?) + Dyno Tuning $400

With these modifications you should be in the 160 to 170 rwhp range if your engine is in good shape. I would also suggest doing the tune up and Bonez High Flo Cat first and the SAFC + Dyno Tune last.
