pics - HARDTOP Conversion - Convertible

Here's a novel idea, "fiberglassing over" a 2nd skin with the top up. Then put the top down, remove the targa/hardtop section and you have a fiberglass hardtop for the winter. Not as "coupe looking" as the miata hardtop, but still sweet.

looks pretty good, i think if it didnt have the ridge marks of the rag top it would look clean, like a 90's mercedes SL500 hardtop. it is a step in the right direction though and a good investment to keep the top protected...im about to spend 1200 bucks for a new top.

I think it looks nasty.. sorry, but even though its been fabbed really really nicely, the cloth top still would look way better.

Wow, that looks like garbage.. If you vert guys have an interest, put a thread together of who would want one and find one to fab one for you. I'm sure if 30 people wanted one, it wouldn't be "too expensive"..

As I see it, he wants to get one made for his car - just fishing for ideas to make it better.

Or, it just could be for closed minded people to get an extra post or two in their count just to flame him.

I myself encourage these posts as I would love to be able to buy a miata type hard top. The homemade version does not interest me. However, if its not discussed, no on will try. Maybe Dave at FC3S.org might be interested in making one out of CF???

What in the world would a use for a 'hard top' on the RX-7 vert be?

Thats almost as bad as asking for a hard top for those Mercedies convertables with the solid top sections (you know the ones I'm talking about)

doesnt look like a hard top at all. looks like a normal convertable top just without the section that pops out. he probubly put a complete piece of vinaly over the entire roof. Doesnt look like a hard top at all. plus a hard top for a convertible? would not be good at all. I tihnk that is why mazda came out with the non-convertable rx7s...

I imagine a true hard top would make the vert's body even stiffer. Like a strut tower brace for the middle of the car.

just get a coupe! the whole point of the miata hardtop is because every last miata came from the factor with soft top. theres already a hardtop for the vert, its the fc3s instead of the fc3c......

They why spend the extra $ and get the 'vert in the first place?

And how does glassing over the top have anything to do with if it snows heavily?

Spend the extra money because the spings and summers are still nice and hot, but the winters like to drown you with snow....

And he is not talking about glassing ove the soft top, as I see it he wants a seperate Hard Top, just like the miata hardtop, made so in the Winter he can lower the soft top, and bolt on the hard top.

I think this is a great idea!

I never had any problems with my top in the snow and ice.

I said it in the other thread... I think this is just a cheap way of not having to replace a worn out top.

The top goes up and down in 30 secs. Why do you need a seperate hard top - that you have to heft and store?

What does the raising and lowering time of the soft-top have anything to do with this thread?

this is funny...they make hardtops for the 3 series BMW, the miata and a bunch of other cars I cant think of right now but for the 7 vert it is suposed to be stupid? The 3 series comes in a coupe so some of you would tell the 3 series vert owners that has a hard top that they should have just bought the coupe? I would love to have the hard top! There are times when I know I cant let the top down for a few days but I need to drive my car and the hard top would provide me witth what I need-added safety and peace of mind. I parked in a parking garage in Venice one day while on vacation in Italy and I looked back at my car and wishing that I had a hard top for it...I did not want to come back to a slashed roof(I did not) ..sure wish I had a hard top for long distance traveling! Top down at 120mph or more for a long time makes YOU very TIRED!!...I dont want to drive slower because we do not need to and I dont want to leave the top down either but the hard top would force me to till I got to where i was going...plus the hard top provides better protection from the elements..this may not always be the case but I am sure it would be for the 7 since it is not new car with the new soft tops that are just as or more quit than hard tops and just as good as keeping the heat in or out etc... plus we just want the best of both worlds...hard top when needed and top down when sunny out...There are lots or people that want this..or the SL and SLK (and all other hard top verts)would not be as popular as they are

I always wonder why it is that people can't understand that people can live in other places during their lifetime.

Some of the cold places I have lived include: Boston, Philadelphia, Wilmington DE, and Denver

I purchased my Vert on Dec 13th. The temperature outside was 5(F). I think I know more about cold than a lot of people.

I was responding to the post where someone said it would be nice to lower the soft top and then have the hard top in place. If it takes only a few seconds to lower or raise the top. And if the soft top keeps the car as warm as needed, then what is the point?

The standard top seals well against wind and rain. I think this is the prime reason to substitute a hard top in winter.

If security is your big concern, then maybe you shouldn't have a convertible in the first place.
