pics - ACV repair help - 2 diaphrams fixed, 3rd inaccessible
Continuing from this failing emissions thread, I'm now able to maintain vacuum on 2 of the 3 ACV valve Diaphrams (repair details below).
But... HOW DO YOU ACCESS THE 3rd diaphram as seen below? If I cut the lip to remove metal top covering the diaphram, I doubt the top would ever maintain a seal again ... even if I bent the metal lip back.
I fixed the two accessible diaphrams by:
1) replacing paper gaskets with ones I cut myself (not sold by Mazda)
2) sanding all contact surfaces that did not have a gasket
3) cleaning diaphram edges
4) cleaning the groove the diaphram sits in
5) using Hylomar non-dry gasket sealer (blue stuff) to fix any edge leaks on the top & bottom of the diaphram
6) cleaned diaphrams (not cracked)
7) replace the old flattened Rubber O-rings with new ones
8) Cleaning the ACV chamber with carb clean & water.

Hailers,
The 3rd diaphram may not be busted, but it's not holding a vacuum when I connect a vacuum tester to it's vaccum passage on the side of the ACV. If I can figure out how to access the 3rd diaphram without damaging the cover, I should be able to check, clean, & re-seal it.

Well I'm getting a spare/used ACV so I can tear into that 3rd inacessible diaphram without being SOL. If anyone has advice on bending/cutting & re-sealing the diaphram's metal top's lip, please let me know.
I can't believe:
- nobody's repaired / fixed one of these before.
- no repair services offered.
- anyone would pay $600 for a new ACV
- ALL of you are cheat emmissions by $$ or direct airpump hookup
I wanna "do it right", not "get-r-done"

the 3rd one is an anti afterburn valve, its not really part of the smog system.

Ok that helps, so I should pass smog with good vacuum on 2 of the 3 diaphrams.
Since NOBODY has attempted repair of the 3rd diaphram, I'll stick my neck out and cut into my spare ACV. Just to show ya' rotorheads some love
Here's a responce from the fc3s.org e-mail list as well with some thoughts:

You cant (access the 3rd diaphram), its crimped. Once you pry it open only way I see to seal it is welding, which of course will ruin the rubber inside. And yes, its an AAB valve, similar to a 1st gens, cept yours is contained in the housing of the ACV and ours are a seperate unit.
If your bent on doing this I'll give you my $0.02 on how I would do it. On the bottom lip where its crimped/folded make a series of radial cuts, maybe 15-20 with a dremel and a cutoff wheel. Then carefully peel/pry back the segments like flower petals till you get the cover off. Then do your repairs. To reattach it, simply crimp/fold each segment back into place with pliers, trying to create as tight a crimp as possible. Then run a bead of Hi temp RTV around the perimiter for a good seal. HTH
