Ok Im sure alot of you guys no that I am new to the board. I am looking into doing 1 of 3 things to my 1990 Turbo II RX7 which has a blown engine:
1) Rebuild the engine
2) Buy a j-spec engine from Corksport.com
3) Buy a rebuilt engine from www.hayesrotary.com (comes with a 1 year warranty...but I must send them my core or pay $300 extra)
First I want to ask what you guys think I should do. I may take a few months to save the money...but a $500-$1000 change is not that big of a deal.
I want to know if anyone has purchased from hayesrotary.com or corksport and I want to know if they were satisfied. Anyway I'm kind of edging more towards hayesrotary.com because I talked to them and they seemed to know there stuff and ontop of that I can pay a extra $150 for a 2 year warranty on the engine. The total with just a one year warranty is $1840 including shipping. Anyway I can't wait to get my RX7 going....so many choices to make now.

How long you want to keep it?
Only a year or two then get the Jspec,
More than a year, you have an extra car so you have time to rebuild it right and you want to tweak some extra power as well as you want to learn a rotary, rebuild it yourself.
More than a year or two and you just want the car to run, you don't care about tweaking up the motor then get the Hayes motor.

also try www.nippon-motors.com ...i think TonyTurboII got his motor from there and it actually came with a warranty but you'd have to ask him to be sure. good luck man!

Is the engine actually BLOWN or worn? If its blown, i would inspect the internals (which requires some effort ). Mine was BLOWN and the apex had scored the housing pretty badly. Plus the rotor had "expanded" around the apex groove, so it was too narrow to fit a seal in there. The price for new housings and rotors was about the price of a new (rebuilt) engine.
If the seals are jsut worn down, you should rebuild. If there is some serious damage, get a new one. Mazda's will probably give the longes life. Plus if you sell the car, you can say it has a new engine under warranty... just MAKE SURE to break it in properly.

I'd buy a Mazda remanufactured engine. They're competitive in terms of pricing with any rotary shop in the U.S. and since they built the damn things in the first place I'm sure the quality is there. There's one in the convertible with 40k on it and it runs very strong.

PS. A Jspec will probably come with a turbo, they do 99% of the time, which you can send off to be rebuilt and upgraded, while you run the stock one. Its a nice conveniance that I plan to use sometime in the future.

i recently replaced a bad engine. the 4 contenders for a rebuild were.
Mazda
Mazdatrix
Atkins
Hayes
most rebuilds were roughly 1700 for a base rebuild.
Mazda wanted 1000 for core 12/12000 warranty
Mazdatrix was just plain too expensive
atkins had a 500 core, but were backed up a little when i called them. 24/24000 warranty
Hayes offers a 36/36000 warranty, and the core is only 300 or 350. plus hayes offers mods that make alot of sense like a high volume oil pump. shimmed oil relief valve. operating oil pressure at 85 psi or so, and running much more oil through the engine at the same time.

If I were you I would ask around for the best Rotary shop in your area. If your in Dallas there has to be alot. I'm sure someone on here could help you. They should be able to rebuild yours & improve it (street port, 3mm apex seals, etc). I would not like to be waiting for the engine, paying for shipping, blah blah blah. Than if the engine is messed up you have to go through the whole sending it back & ****. Thats just me, but I like to visually see the people I deal with. Thats my 2.

It depends on what you want.If you want an engine that lasts longer then rebuilt the one you have, but if you want power then you should get the j-spec they are awesome engines.
And if you get one try to buy and enfine because they have a better design turbo and if you add mufflers then its a 280hp
car its hard to beat that .

Wow thanks for the reply's. Here is what I want:
This car will be my fun car....weekends and after work...so I don't expect to drive it a whole lot like my Honda. I do want it to last a while...I'm not expecting it to last to long...but you get the idea. I would love to have atleast some type of warranty on it. Now I also want it to be fast...but then again my car as of right now is a 94 civic cx hatchback which is the low end models and slow as hell.
Now to answer the question about rotar shops in Dallas. The only one I have heard of is Rotary Performace and they want $3500 for a rebuild and on top of that they have a 1 month + wait..
I think I may go to nippon-motors and check them out. I talked to some friends and they suggested I get one from cork-sport.com or nippon. They said that they usually come with the turbo's and my friends said they will do the swap for the older turbo and junked engine...which sounds good to me cause I know nothing about swapping a motor and defiently don't have the tools to do it.
