Open headers are loud

Just noting a reality. People say "Rotaries are SOOO loud, it hurts to drive," and you invariably think they are over exaggerating the volume. Heres notice that they are telling the truth. It hurts. i have to wear ear plugs.

Turns out the cat back that I purchased doesnt fit up to an RB header/presilencer, so until i can get the car to an exhaust shop to remedy this problem I am forced to drive with an open exhaust.

One pleasant benefit of this is the ability to scare the crap out of pedestrians. I cruise up to them in 2nd gear, clutch in and just before I reach them I dump the clutch and floor it. The volume goes from loud ricer at full throttle to "jesus christ, did a top fuel dragster just pass me." People literally jump. Its fun.

hahaha Good Times!
I unbolt the header when I seafoam the beast. My neighbor (ex ford worker) always comes over when it is smoking and tells me the head gasket is blown...
Uh its not my mothers Buick LeSabre!

Yes, they are seriously that loud, a buddy of mine had his mufflers fall off and was running on just an aftermarket presilencer. When he came over for me to weld the pipes back together I heard him comming when he got off the interstate about a mile away and when he pulled up he was also wearing ear plugs. When he got out of the car he said his body still felt like it was rattling.

The last time I sat beside a car with open headers (peripheral port 13B) it made by brain itch when the engine was revved past 2.5K:

A full bridge 12A with sidepipes is just as bad:

And of course a 4 rotor isn't quiet either:

Truth. The car doesnt come alive until around 5.5k, but at least I have lost the 5.5k hesitation that I was getting before the header install.

Now I need to get a cone intake on there and hope that helps with the 7500-8k power loss I am experiencing. This is on an Aux Bridge NA engine with a large streetport, I should still be making power there.

wow. you need to have a talk with rotarygod. your air filter isn't the cause of the restriction. also, an aux bridge isnt gonna make power that high. and if your not runing a stand alone, then wow. wow you have no idea.

just step away form the rx7.

yes. brings back so many fond memories. i ran open header a few times, my Dad used to tell me he could hear me coming from about a mile and a half away. pedestrians were not pleased. there was no way i could live with that on a long term basis.

now there was a time when i ran with my header and one presilencer (Rotary Engineering) for a few weeks as i decided what i wanted to do with my exhaust, it was loud. i remember catching the attention of a motorcycler rider one night going up the Bronx River Parkway at full throttle ... mmmm. i think even in my old age now, i could probably live with that as a weekend cruiser - but unlike New York, it just probably wouldn't fly very well with the nosy ****** down here in Florida. god, i can't wait to move back home ...

I snapped the exhaust stud on my stock exhaust manifold a few years back, so I ran with nothing but the stock manifold for about a week while waiting for the RB header to come in. I only floored it once and my ears were ringing for about 15 minutes. Keep in mind it was an NA using ported TII housings, so it didn't even have the exhaust baffles in them.

I actually had to take it in to get new tires during this time, and the guy at the shop said "Damn, that sounds like NASCAR." I also passed a few cops with it like this and they didn't even turn their head. I guess they are just immune with all the damn ricers around here.

lol

I do enjoy passing back the aggravation with the noise to people who do stupid crap on the road. they cut me off or make an illegal turn? I leave their ears ringing their hearing for my safety... still not quite an even trade, but they never see it that way. screw 'em.

so is it a bad idea for me to go rb headers, straight pipe to y to turbo rb mufflers? i plan on going with a turbo swap so i bought the turbo mufflers, rb even says not to go with em in a n/a, i noticed that afterwards. downside, i've already bought all the parts though....

Car is at the exahust shop right now. Should be much quieter this afternoon.

Had a popo pull up next to me, give me a shake of the head and pull away on the drive to the exhaust shop. thought for sure he would pull me over. I just pointed at my ear plugs and I think he understood that I didnt want my car to be that loud.

Mine was actually quiter with the exhaust off of it - since I planned to go turbo and didn't want to pay twice for the same exhaust work, I had them make it 3" down to dual 2 1/2" on an NA. There was so much resonance it sounded like a dragstrip. But the harmonics were such that at 2200 rpm it was almost silent.

Sounds like you suffer from excessive suspension travel. I've been airborne quite a few times, but I've got 440 lb springs in the front and 300 lb springs in the back - it compresses not so much.
