all my lines (N/A and TII) are routed just like in that picture...I'd do it that way.

Strange. I checked the hard copy of the '87 FSM, and it's different from the diagram. From page 1-70 and 1-74, I gathered the following (looking at the s4 pump):

Top left (blue): front intake
Top right (white): front housing
Bottom left (green): rear intake
Bottom right (yellow): rear housing

You may not be able to see the color coding. Mine has long since faded away.

I looked again at the FSM. The diagram you posted is from page 2-2, and is a structural drawing intended to show the layout of the components. I would not trust it to show the routing of the lines, since it conflicts with the explicit instructions provided on pages 1-70 and 1-74 of the same manual.

I would go with the instructions I provided above. Again, this is for the s4 with the mechanical pump.

not trying to argue...but maybe further my idea that it doesn't matter...but my SE was layed out like pictured above. Ran that way for years.

I'm not sure it matters either, other than for fit. The oil's gonna go up the tube and get sucked into the motor, seems like, one way or the other.

It doesnt really matter as long as they fit. I thought it was pretty obvious as the lines were already formed to fit.
