OK, Power steering conversion!

This is something I don't know much about...
Anyways, I have P/S... I am not sure if want want to get rid of it though.
You lose a little power through parasitic drag, and a little bit of weight...
but really, how much?? Is it actually worth it?

I took my belt off, and drove it, and DAMN it was harder than any other car I've driven.
I'm guessing because of the lack of pressure equalization.

Anyways, Its a bit of a PITA to swap in a manual rack.. has anyone just hooked fluid equalization tubes like on FC3S.com?
I can't buy a manual rack right now... is it a LOT easier to turn than the rigged up power rack??
I really hope the rigged power rack is substantially easier to turn than just running with the belt off! Is it?

keep in mind that with the manual rack, you'll have to turn the wheel more to get the same amount of turning. My car has p/s, but it doesn't work. leak in the rack somewhere. I still have it hooked up, but its not working. I don't think its too hard. I autocrossed it. that should say something. its up to you. you probably will get used to it. I don't know about doing the thing on fc3s.org though. If I don't have a problem with it, I'm not messing with it.

I've done it. It feels just like a manual rack, and is a LOT easier than with just the belt removed.

I removed my P/S a couple days ago.
Just rigged it up so that the fluid was still circulating thru the rack but nothing else.
I have my engine out so I figured Id clean up some room

I MIGHT still have all the parts #'s of the stuff I got and I might be able to take a pic of it with my friend cam if anyone wants...

Cool- do you like it?

Now- since the pinion is still in contact with the rack (like a manual)
Can't you just remove the pump, and drain all the fluid?????
It seems to me it would make it even more responsive since there is no fluid flow going around to danpen things.b The fluid is kindof pointless without it being used for assist anyways right??

Just a thought that makes sense to me... but I've never done any steering work!

For a $100.00 you can buy a good manual steering rack from a wrecking yard.
It works MUCH better than the PS rack with no fluid.

I honestly am not going to spend 100$ to get rid of my power steering.
I also have to save money for the summer, before I go back to school in the fall. Everyonw will notice a distictly "poor" edge to my upcoming mods! (Fabricating this, removing that, tuning these, stealing from this old lady...") No buying anything!

I still have the fluid in my rack but no pump.
It just loops around so that the rack stays lubed up, seems to turn pretty nicely with the front end off the ground, but like I said I dont have my engine in so I cant really test it out on the road as of yet...

I removed my PS pump and just connected the lines together and left the fluid in. Even auto-x is more fun and I feel more precise this way. Yeah, its kinda pain parking lots, but I don't mind, besides it helps build arm strength.
