Oil pan gasket or no gasket?

I have a new oil pan gasket sitting on my shop table. It has been sitting there for almost a year now looking pretty comfy. Well I might try to get that sucker on there in the next few weeks and was wondering if any had an argument for NOT using a gasket. I see that in the manual it has a procedure for both. But no "recommendation." Why would someone not want to use a gasket? What are the pros and cons of both?

BTW; I do not have any oil leaks at this time. I am just doing some preventive maintenance since I ran out of other fun stuff to do.

In the FSM it looks like Mazda has no preference as to whether or not to use use the gasket. Why would they even bother to keep making the gasket if there is no real need to? Seems like the job would be a lot easier without the gasket.

I would recommend using the gasket with Hylomar sealer. The Hylomar always remains pliable, and makes removal of the oil pan and gasket (should it be necessary at some time in the future) very easy. In other words, you won't need to scrape RTV off the pan and engine. Just my $0.02.

I figure i'll do it with the gasket and the hylomar vs doing it without.. having it leak.. and being like *DOH*

My turbo's not back from BNR yet ne ways so not like I need to rush to get my motor in hehe I'll opt to go with gasket.

Yeah on the half dozen motors I have done now, I always use the gasket and sealer, rather than just RTV.

On the motor (an old datsun/Nissan 200sx) I used RTV it was pure nightmare to clean and prep when I had to pull it apart again.
