Oil Leaking...?

So I dropped my car off at the shop today, came home, noticed some oil in my garage where my 7 had been sitting, and then I called the shop later to see how it was doing and they told me it was leaking oil (go figure) but they didn't know from where. No normally I wouldn't think this to be a bad thing, and I forgot exactly what he said but I did hear "could constitute a rebuild" and thats no good.

I am new to rotaries, however the guy working on them is not, so whats the case usually when this happens?

And on a side note if the engine is screwed how much can you get off a parted out engine? I thought the car ran great but the shop owner is telling me otherwise saying the engine could be f*cked and that sucks b/c it's the only reason I bought this car.

Have a compression test done, display results here. Shop mechanics will take advantage of anyone, rotaries are no exeption. Rotaries also have many additional oil related mechanisms so random leaks are quite common, it can leak from places you would never imagine.(sometimes). def get a second opinion. As far as the internal components, it would depend of whether they are usable or not, you could check ebay, or the classifieds here to see whats going for what price. Good Luck Ishibubu.

Well it's an old friend of my dads. Certainly not buddy buddy but he fixes our cars (now a conspiracy forms in my head haha).

Umm before the sale a compression test was done, he said it was 135psi on both (if that sounds right) however this was done when he bought the car then he let it sit.

It's a turbo, he said engine was rebuilt and had 10-20k miles on it (bought it from another dude w/o receipts, I believe the receipts got wet or something? I know it sounds shady but I bought it from a pretty trust worthy guy, I'm sure he will try to help me out).

A compression test won't be a help with an oil leak. What an odd suggestion...

As for the leak itself, where is it coming from? There is only one location on the engine where an oil leak would need a rebuild...at the dowl pin.

compression sounds good. Yes Aaron you are correct; the compression would have nothing to do with the oil problems, however it is good to know that the engine was running at optimal psi previous to the buyers purchace. This leads me to believe that the need for a rebuild is unlikely, unless like you said the oils leaking from the dowl pin.

If the car starts easily, doesn't flood and drives well, compression is fine. No sense complicating matters with a test that most new owners have major trouble performing.

Car starts great, only other problem I could say is that at idle it kinda bogs out. Otherwise runs fine.

Put some paper towels under your car, after an hour, look up from wherever your spot is. Your lines could have some leaks in those (If you hit a hard bump or something)

- Oil lines and where they meet up at the oil cooler
- Metering pump (front cover lower pass. side)
- Oil pan to engine or to front cover
- Front seal behind front pulley hub
- Rear seal (have to take out tranny)
- Being a turbo, check oil plumbing and leaks around turbo

Have them put one of those U.V. dyes that go into the oil, then run the engine, and check with a U.V. light. Or just turn her on and wait for drips, if it is a bigger leak.

Keep your eye on the oil level constantly!

Also it could be leaking from the front cover gasket or the oil filter pedestal.

Was going to say that same thing. My NA was leaking from the Oil Cooler lines, and my TII is leaking from the OMP. Dang oil.

Thanks for the tips guys because my T2 is leaking oil drastically. I plan on inspecting it more closely this weekend. I just got my car a last weekend so this ought to be fun!

easiest thing to help is to look for the highest point the oil reaches then look for the closest oil related part.....it will most likely be that item....

i had an oil leak that had me so baffled because it seemed to be coming from everywhere....i mean everything on the drivers side that could possibly leak oil had oil on it.....reason being.....oil filter pedestal was leaking....as the car drove the air flew all over the place under the filter....even got onto the trans
