Oil Cooler Flow

I need to know which fitting is the inlet on the oil cooler. Is it the one opposite the plug, or the one out the side of the tank? Thanks. Dave C.

Inlet = top. Outlet = side. Thermostat = bottom.

This information conflicts with the picture on page 104 of the Haynes manual which shows the side as the inlet and the top as the outlet.

For the knowledgeable out there, which is correct?

The line that comes out from the front of the engine feeds oil to the cooler. The long line from the back of the engine is the return line from the cooler. There is a fine picture in a thing called the FSM which is short for Factory Service Manual (just in case).

I no longer have the lines, just the cooler. Which is correct? I hope Matlock is right. I now have mine all plumbed to the Buick transplant, and I passed that info on to two others that needed to know. Dave C.

It's like the man said several days ago. The IN is the banjo bolt on the top. The OUT is the banjo bolt on the side. Download the OIL SECTION of the fsm that is FREE online. Never question MATLOCK. He's always right.

Now I'm really confused. I dug out my Mazda RX-7 shop manual (on CD). It contains a picture of the oil cooler. It has the lines labeled #3 (side) inlet. #4 (top) outlet. Dave C.

I'm not a bit confused. I looked in the 87 and 91 fsm and the lines are as described in my post above and also Matlock's. Your driving my post count up each time I answer this in the same way. Stop me from posting!
