oh just f*%k a god d@mned monkey!!!
okay...whilst inspecting my two S4 13Bs (one to go into go-cart, one to go into S5 chassis) I notice that the one I KNOW works and runs good has a piece broken off. Where the water pump mounts up...that one piece that sticks up off the top of the block that the pump bolts onto, that piece is broken off. I'm going to see if I can get a pic up to post...but I need to know if there's anything I can do about it?

just the stud is gone. or the whole "ear"
if the whole "ear" is gone. I guess you'll need a new water pump housing.
edit: wait that isn't the water pump housing. is that the front iron? pic is small.

I have no idea how it happened. It was never hit or anything. I know that unequal stress from the water pump couldn't have done it...the water pump would have cracked before that did. I mean **** I just don't get it.
I'm going to pull the engine and redo the other studs that hold the pump down, think I'm going to put some in there that have a more aggressive thread and that are stronger and see if the pump will still seal off. If not I'm screwed I guess.

do you have the part that broke off?
if so just weld it back on.
if not and depending on how much is missing you
might be able to build the ear back up with weld, i know
this can be done, i have done it to reconstruct a ear
on the other side of the motor where the trani bolts on.

cool...I might try that. Isn't it cast iron? I'll have to have cast iron rods won't I?
How should I go about welding it? should I handtighten the pump on so that I know it's lined up propperly?
Also, what's that in your avatar? I mean I know what it is but I don't.

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
Well, if the ear broke off enough to get into the water jacket, you're SOL. Otherwise, it should be fine. I wouldnt disturb it, either. IF the WP and housing are still installed, leave them be. The rest of the bolts should hold it sealed ok. IF you have to form a seal in the future without that, then Id use a fair amout of RTV to help with any spots that dont fully collapse when tightened.
I think you;ll be fine, honestly.

thanks! It doesn't get into the water jacket...just the ear it's self is busted. I think I might try to weld it back on but I don't know just yet. I've had A LOT of problems getting the water pump to seal propperly ion the past (have removed it 4 times and the seal has failed each time). I just don't want any more problems after I pull it again.
