newbie help

im looking at a 90 rx7. It has about 90,000 miles on it. I want something dependable that will last a little while. anyways, some people have told me that they have well over 100,000 original miles on theirs, and others have told me that the rotary engines blow up after 70 or 80000 and you have to put in a new engine. What is the typical of a totally original rsx rotary engine without the turbo?

thanks for helping me

ben

mine's at 100400 right now. my last 7 had 174k on it and was still runing strong when i sold it.the rx7 is no differant than any other car if you maintaine it properly it will last you for a long time. turbo's are a bit more ficle but i've heard of them lasting more than 100k too.

If you want a reliable car, get a Nissan Assuming this is going to be a daily driver...

schudog77,

Hey welcome to the forum. I went with a convertible rx-7 as my daily and a turbo II as my project/weekend car. Both can be reliable but the NA engines tend to be less buggy. Keep in mind though if you want MASSIVE horsepower the TII is the ONLY way to go.

As a fun daily, you might look at the convertible (luxury), GXL (luxury), GTU (sporty), GTU-S (lightweigt stripped racing with better gearing), or sport (lightweight racing).

A few pictures:

The 13B NA from my 88SE had 146,000 mi when I decided to pull it for rebuilding. It never died, and won an autocross the weekend before it was pulled from the car.

Much like any other piece of machinery, the life of the engine depends on how it is treated. Get the compression checked before you buy the car, and that will give you an idea about how much time the engine has left.

The numbers depend on how and where you test it. However, you always want the 6 chambers to show similar peak pressure. You can check out these links, and SEARCH for compression posts on this forum.

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/c...sion_test.html

Compression test is covered on page 10-1 of the service manual under the How-To's tree on this site:
