Newbie!?????
alright so Im seriously considering buying my friends 2nd GEn RX7 turbo. its a beautiful car (white on white wheels), perfect body, no rust. now it is not running, he took some components off, in an attempt to fix some vaccuum lines. needless to say, after he was done he had NO idea what he got himself into and just left the thing apart. so the car is perfect for a swap(in my opinion). now I come from a subaru/ corvette, so the first thing that came to my mind is an LS1 swap. any ideas on other things i can do? is the rotary as much of a pain in the a$$ as those piston/ valve guys make it out to be? your opinions will be greatly appriciated! thanks!

Yes, it is just as much of a pain, and a whole lot more. But once you've driven a car with a rotary, that pain is well worth having a superior form of power
I'm not telling ya to buy the car, but IMHO putting a LS1 in a 7 takes the soul out of it.
More power, for way cheaper. But...not as much fun. If you do choose to get yourself into RX-7's, the members here are extremely knowledgeable and would be more than happy to help out with any questions you have. That's what this place is for.
The 2nd Gen FAQ sticky has a goldmine of information in it that could alleviate some of your concerns and general curiousity. Check it out. And welcome to the club.

if it in good shape and just in pieces that's one thing, that doesn't require a swap or rebuild or naything other than fixing the vac lines and then putting the manifold and throttle body back on....but like the other guys said, if it's a lemon you'll suffer and your friend will have your money and that would suck.

yeah. well here are my main concerns. A) how hard is it to build the turbo2 rotary?
B) how long will it last (i've heard you have to rebuild the motor every 20k or so)C) how hard would it be to do the ls1 swap and D) how much do complete turboII motors go for?

No it's not. It's a car with a motor. If you beat on it, don't take care of it, and do shoddy work it's going to break. If you take good care of it, it will take good care of you. Just like any other car. There is a lot of hype surrounding rotaries (as you already know) and most of it is over-hyped and bogus. (see wrxdwpsti's 20k comment above).
Define "build."
Depends on what you do and how you do it? If you are an idiot you will pay the price for being so.
Go elsewhere for that information. Nobody here really cares to hear that you want to do it, you will get flamed, and there is a proper section to ask that.

Man, what is it today with all the negative vibes...?
Anyways, the first thing I noticed was "turbo...white on white wheels". Is this a 10th Anniversary RX-7? Does it have rotor shaped badges that say 10th anniv. on the fender? White trim around the lights? Other clues? Is it genuine? That would mean something. Next...check (or have someone check) the compression of the engine to make sure it's good. That in itself will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. Post some pics., btw, and km/mile odometer info. How is the play in the turbo (have to remove intake to the turbo). Does it burn a lot of oil (see FAQ or search - rotaries are similar to 2-strokes and have oil metered into the engine, so they will burn some oil), is the exhaust blue? How did it start up before it was taken apart?
Rotaries can last 120k to 170K, maybe more, depending on how they're taken care of. They also like to be revved high, and pushed (properly). The TurboII can be very reliable and produce good power with the right mods.

Theres no need to be short. If my thread annoyed you then don't read it. If I wanted to get pissy little kids yelling at me I would've gone to nasioc and got flamed by the subie kids.
