New Idea: Push Start a Auto

ok i was sitting on the toilet reading the haynes man. and it says the the car can start in other gears than N or P if your N switch isnt working. SO what i was thinking can it be put into drive and disable the N switch and try to push start it? I dont know if this has been thought of or not i was just wondering but i dont want my car to be the tester before i find out if it actually works or not. This is just for the people with autos that need to push start instead of actually doing the ATF trick. (you know just making another option, or at least trying to)

Why can't you just lock it in low gear and try?

That's odd, almost every auto I've had could be push started from low gear... Strange

You would have to get it rolling in neutral and then pop it into drive.

You would probably have to get it rolling pretty fast. And you would have to be able to switch from neutral to drive without hitting the brakes (you can't do that in some cars).

The answer is NO!!!! You cannot start an automatic tranny by push starting it. You can also severly dammage your transmission in trying.

yes you can. and yes you can mess up clutches because it has to be done at a higher speed than a standard. if yo think it can be done and if you have an auto trans drive down the road about 35-40mph in d1 turn you ignition off and then back on

Don't try it!

anything is possible, however, it will cost you dearly!

It doesn't sound like a good idea unless absolutely necessary.

I can't see how you'll get the auto tranny to shift without the engine spinning......

another of the many advantages of a manual trans.
Moral of the story: don't buy an auto

If the engine is not rotating suplying pump pressure via the tranny pump, the clutch packs inside the transmission will have no pressure to engage the clutch disks. Therefore no powerflow through the tranny.

If you really want to have fun with an automatic and see what it can do. Accelerate up to around 35-45mph and throw that baby in reverse, you will kiss the windshield as it decelerates without breaking the tires loose. The tranny will not live to long, but its one very intersting feeling.
