New engine from Mazda

Anyone ever buy an engine from a dealer and have trouble with them?
Looking for a 91 non turbo and looking at all options.
Thanks

a brand new engine can be had from mazdatrix. they are factory authorized seller of Mazda parts. expect to pay close to 6 grand for a completely utterly brand new engine CORE.

If you get a "new" motor from the dealer, except in very rare cases it is actually a factory reman. This means they spec out the parts and reuse what isn't in spec. One advantage of this is that most rotor housings fail their inspection, so you will likely get brand new housings with the motor. They do tend to be quite expensive, though. There have also been a few cases I have heard of where they had some retarded error in the build, such as using one s5 turbo and one s5 NA rotor in the engine.

It looks as if to rebuild will cost almost the same as what a local dealer quoted ( $4???.?? ) and with 130k+ miles on this one, doesn't sound as if there is much usable in the core. I can see a damaged apex seal through the spark plug hole so I can expect the housing is shot. If I open it up I'll loose the core charge from the sites I've looked at. Still undecided about what to do, the rest of the car is in too good of shap not to repair.

If somebody quoted you 4000+ for a rebuild, don't go to them. Check out www.rotaryresurrection.com. Kevin is a great guy and is skilled as a ****. He'll do ya right for a LOT less than 4k.

However, the price of a rebuild is completely dependant on how much needs to be replaced.

Your local dealer knows dick about rotary engines and I can almost guarantee you they WILL **** you on the deal.

If you are going to rebuild and ever even thought about racing, Join Mazda Motorsports. Factory parts are much cheaper and all they require is that you compete in two events a year. AutoX Counts.

How much cheaper? Ive thought of doing that but want sure if the a basic NASA or SCCA membership would due or if you needed to get licenced for a specific class as well.

I just ordered a S5 counterweight for my new flywheel. List / Dealer Price is $160. Mazdacomp team member price was $100. I could not even buy one used for that price.

Costs nothing to join and you do not have to have a membership with any club. You only have to participate in two Sanctioned races per year and send them results. Open track days do not count. The easiest is to attend two AutoX per year.

There is one caviat. You can only buy parts for the car you are racing. You cannot buy to resell or even use on another car that you own.

Parts are much cheaper with mazdamotorsports. Many parts are as much as half off what a dealer would charge, and everything is at least 15-20% off list (dealers are higher than list price, BTW.) Yes, even housings are 15-20% cheaper than mazdatrix, for example.
All you need is a standard SCCA or NASA membership. If the car is running you have to do 2 competitions (read website for details). If you can prove the car is torn down, they will waive that until the car is running again.

Yeah... My comment isn't saying that roads don't suck elseware... I'm mainly focusing on people from California who say that Oregon roads are awesome... the argument being that we have specific road taxes and a great DOT..

LIES. Our DOT blocks off roads under construction during the day when traffic is the highest, works slowly during the summer only to have to pause the project over the winter and resume NEXT summer.. And when they are done, the roads are bumpier than it was BEFORE they tore it up.... Oh. .and 2 weeks after they finish, they have to cut a big ******* trench in it because they forgot to plan the traffic lights ahead of time.... Now you have a big *** bump where they patched the trench. Retarded. At least CalTrans can patch a road when it cracks.

I'm just bitter because I hit a couple potholes this morning really fast.
