I think to help smooth it out again so when you recrush it...it is more of a smooth surface.

well i just took it off and it looks to have a bit of a lip on it so i will probably need a new one, sanding it down will probably cause it to crack in half since where the lip is it is already 'crushed' to half its width already

Yea one side is beveled. If you put the crush washer on the wrong side you can destroy the crush washer. Dont ask how I know. FWIW I have reused one or 2 of them with no problems but you may as well if you can get ahold of some that will fit. I'm sure the dealer will have them. I bought mine from mazdatrix.

does the beveled side face towards the engine or away from the engine ? if i bought one new does it come pre beveled or is it completely straight ?

edit - the mazdatrix website said this " If Sealing Washer/Rear Banjo (two required) or Sealing Washer for 86-92 Oil Cooler (two required per Banjo bolt, 4 per cooler"

there is only 1 on the rear where it connects to the block tho, and i know the front doesnt have one since it screws on.. aside from that i dont get why it says two required if there was only one on there, and how u would need 4 if the front doesnt even need them.. all i know is im confused more now lol

I tried the local Dealership but they were sold out.

I ended up paying 1.25 a piece at Mazdatrix plus $6 shipping for 6 of them

I always recommend using new crush washers. I've gotten by with used ones when I had to get it running that day and didn't have access to any, but I generally try to use new ones. I've seen ppl use old ones and get some nasty leaks, so if you can, new is best.

By 6 I think he means 2 for where the rear hooks to the block, and 2 for each connections to the oil cooler, so 3 connections x 2 each = 6 total.

You need 2 for a banjo bolt, one on each side of the banjo. Put the flat side of the washer next to the bolt. That will prevent galling and improve sealing.

Some auto stores carry the washers. The Mazda dealer told me they get thiers from Car Quest.

If you take your crush washers to a NAPA dealer, they can match them up with actual size pictures in their catalog. I think they cost less than a buck.

When I needed crush washers for my oil cooler lines, Mazdatrix told me to go to a local parts store. I paid under $2 for 6.

Just re-aneal them. Hold it over a propane torch or a gas burner till its red hot then drop it in cold water.

Oh yeah.

In a real bind I went to Ace Hardware and bought some copper washers.

They weren't the right ID so I used a drill press to get them to fit the banjo's perfectly.

Make sure it's copper since it crushes easiest.
BTW the washers I got from Mazdatrix are silver so I'm thinking it's aluminum or nickel or some other soft metal.

Get new ones if you want to do the job right. Skimping on 5 bucks worth of washers is just plain stupid considering that these washers are there to seal up your lubrication system.

NAPA didn't carry any in the same size and my local dealer had a whole drawer of various size copper washers. My local Mazda dealer gave them away to me for free! YIPEEE
