Wierd Shifting problems...

Ok I have a 10th anniversary turbo II with a full exhaust, fuel pump, intake, fcd, and fuel controller. In order to get into first gear I have to go all the way up and to the left, to get to 2nd I have to go back into nuetral and down left, 3rd is a bitch to shift fast, forth and fifth are easy to get to. The shifter is stiff, it has new bushings its just the shift pattern is like no other car i've ever driven.

Ok now I get what you are saying. When my bushings were messed up, my shifter did the same thing. First is str8 up and 2nd is down, there is no need to go to the side

Should be able to pull it straight back from 1-2nd without having to move over to between 3/4. The shifter should rest between 3/4 when left alone in neutral, but there's no reason why you can't just go straight back to 2nd, then up and over to the 'default' position and into 3rd.

Clutch hydraulics might need bleeding

It's so easy to do, you should try it. Do the two person version.

1st isn't supposed to be 'straight' up. It's always left and up, the shifter should rest on the gate between 1st and 3rd and 2nd and 4th, leaning more towards 3rd and 4th. But once you have it in 1st, you should be able to come straight back from 1st into 2nd without having to return to the center spot.

the best way to bleed the clutch is to :
take some hose and stick it on the bleed valve. and then run it straight down into a 32 oz gatorade bottle. and fill the bottle with the fluid then open the bleed valve and pump away. just MAKE sure u keep fluid in the master resivoir it will get air into the lines. Just keep pumping till no air bubbles come out. This works good cause when pullin the clutch out suck in, all it can do is suck in fluid not air.

well my bushings were messed up. I changed them and the springs, now it shifts just fine.

I guess the way I worded it made it seem that it is supposed to be straight up from the rest postion. What I meant, was that once you go to the left you should be able to go up and down into first and 2nd, not that v movement that you described. But what you are describing did happen to me with the messed up, or should I say, missing bushings..

Yeah, if you have bad bushings, you kind of have to return to center to get the ball back in place and to actually get some movement out of it, since the shifter will move right up and out of the socket it rests in with bad bushings.
