New cat ans still can't pass emisions!

So I went and spent $200, then custom stainless flanges and had it all installed for $100. I still flunked the sniffer. Both hydrocarbon and CO.

Now, here are the particulars.
I have an RB header, no smog pump, and an MSD, which i have proven does reduce emissions on other vehicles. Anyway,
The car was slightly overheating in the pit. this is due to that fact that my e-fan relay socket melted not too long ago. Not normally a problem in this weather. but I had to wait in line. It wasn't really hot, but it was about 3/4 of the way.
I don't know if that will affect emissions or not.
Will I be able to pass emissions with a header and no pump?

You NEED the airpump!

and does your cat has the air pipe inlet\port?

I passed MD\VA\PR emissions, with a RB header, stock cat, HKS cat back; and that was on a street ported engine.

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

Don't give out bad advice. This costs people money and spreads bad information on the forum that comes up in searches then gets repeated.

Here is the correct advice. Your 3way cat needs air injection to provide the necessary oxygen to convert the unburned hydrocarbons into CO2 and H20.

Without the air injection, you will not pass, regardless of any 'tricks' you might use.

I hope you didn't spend money on a converter that doesn't have an air injection tube.

As you have already gathered from the other guys, you WILL NOT pass without the airpump. I usually run the airpump straight to the CAT before I take the test just in case the ACV has crapped out during the year. Also, not meaning to give bad advice but last time I took the test WITH airpump, new CAT, oil change, new plugs, TPS adjusted, timing right on, etc... I FAILED by a very tiny amount. I went home, added about half gallon of denatured alcohol, drove around for about 30 minutes, went back, PASSED the test and then went straight to the gas station and filled up.

By the way, when you need a new direct fit CAT with an airtube, go to performancepeddler.com, there cheap.

Thanks for proving my point. Try that 'trick' with no airpump and see how close you get...

BTW, most urban gas is already 10% alky minimum.

HC + CO comes from too much fuel and not enough air. That's why you need the air pump. Plus you're ruining your new cat with such a high fuel/air ratio. There is no way your cat or anything else can magically remove that HC (fuel) and CO (needs oxygen to become CO2) without the air needed to burn it. The purpose of the cat is just to help the HC and CO meet the NOx (essentially NOS) and oxygen. That's why your NOx is testing good, maybe better than before; all the NOx and oxygen got used up trying to burn the HC and CO.

It does have an air tube. But I thought that was just for the 5 & 6 ports. I didn't know the air pump did anything involving the cat on these cars. I was thinking of going to the track and buying some ethanol and making my own E85 since I can't buy it. But that defeats the purpose of not polluting. I want to drive the car and not pollute as much as my Explorer. Is there any way to do this? If not I will have to sell the car I love the most.
Thanks

+++ on runnin the air pump right to the cat... you can take it off after you pass. My buddy has gotten his TII to pass and another turbo 7 to pass by doin this. I am sure that it will work. Funny how I was an emmissions inspector/tester in CT and now givin advice on how to cheat... gotta love it!!!

The purpose of the air pump is to supply air to the cat for emissions reasons. It is an essential item for good emissions. Not are you only hurting your emissions without one but after not too long you'll destroy your new cat too. Get an air pump.
