Must pass smog today, hose missing from smog pump, need help.
I bought my FC from some kid in Arizona. I live in Las Vegas and bought a plane ticket to Arizona with cash in hand and bought this car. Well, the kid had neglected to mention a lot of things from our emails and phone calls, so I found all these surprises after I had already bought a plane ticket and flown there.
When I got to finally see the car in person, he mentioned something about the smog pump and the dual alternator pulley and he said it would be really easy to sort back out to stock spec and pass smog. I knew little to nothing about the 13B when I made the purchase a few months back so I was thinking to myself "oh well, it looks ghetto, he has this tube on the engine wrapped up with a napkin, I'll just research how to get it back to stock on the forums." Well, I've looked at the service manual exhaust and emmissions section and the diagrams are somewhat vague.
As far as I can tell, the belt for the pump is still connected to the air pump and is spinning it. I have no idea what the dual alternator pulley is for (teal arrow). Also, the red arrows are pointing to where a hose should go. The second red arrow is pointing to a spot not shown in the picture (its sort of behind or on the side of the intake area box thing) where another end of a hose can connect to, but the kid has plugged the hole with a rubber stopper (sort of like a cork from a wine bottle). What am I missing, is it just a hose? I need to get my car smogged today or tomorrow and have it registered. From the research I did, I would imagine a hose goes from the pump to the ACV (AIR CONTROL VALVE?) What other hoses would I/could I be possibly missing? I don't get why people hack stuff up thinking they will gain horsepower when in reality they will gain nothing? As always, any input is greatly appreciated
Your pict. didn't work.
If the air pump is spining you are half way there! First the hose on the front side of the pump goes to the airbox so that it receives filtered air. If there is a cone filter on the car and it doesn't have a spot for the hose then you can get a little tiny filter that will fit over the pumps intake as well. Short term you can do with out the filter or hose. Its just there to prevent stuff from cloging your ACV (right with the accronym by the way) The hose on the back side goes to the ACV. Now depending on the series of the car, you may be able to get an autozone, el cheapo hose on there with out kinking. I think the S5 works OK with it but I'm not sure. If not Mazdatrix tor the dealer will get you a perfect replacement.
Something to think about... If the car has been running without an airpump for a long time the cat may be clogged. OR The cat may have been removed which is why the air pump may not be hooked up. Check the split air pipe that goes down to the cat. If it has been blocked off then, probably no cat.
Good luck

woah, thanks for the quick reply. I have an '86 S4. I'm going to go to the dealer first to get the part number, then I'll go to autozone to see if I can fab something up. My pic is being hosted on my comcast account, can someone else confirm they can't view the pic?
So basically, right now the pump is spinning and sucking raw air that is being filtered by a paper towel/napkin (lol) that is rubber banded over the opening on the front side of the pump. The napkin is black like a cigarrette filter. Does this mean my ACV is clogged? Also, since the pump is still running even though its not getting filtered air, assuming all other connections are in place (split air pipe that goes down to cat), would the cat still have a chance of being fried/clogged?.. or does that only happen when the pump isn't working at all? Thanks again

Who here in AZ sold you that car?
. I was thinking to myself "what does he mean by that?" I have to granny shift first, I mean, at a stoplight, I have to time the other lights if I'm the first car at the light so I can shift it into first in time without having the guy behind me honk his horn. Double clutching doesn't help. Same problem with reverse, and basically you can't rev match, you just have to granny shift whenever downshifting to any gear. Car doesn't shift into 2nd when its cold, at all, I can sometimes force it into 2nd when its cold, sometimes. Radiator had a ton of air in it and coolant light kept coming on for a while until I figured that one out. Clutch/brake reserviour and powersteering rez were below the "low" mark. The car would randmonly die and I couldn't even jump start it, diagnosed the battery and the alernator, they were both fine, turns out the grounds are bad, really bad. Actually, the battery terminals both negative and positive are pretty corroded. The kid said he maintained the car and had changed all the fluids. Oh well. Its got a five lug conversion, 4 piston calipers, vert (aluminum hood), stock mazda limited slip, and "only" had 97k on the odometer. I payed too much I think. The hood and front quarter panel are primer but the body is practically mint otherwise minus paint. Got it for $2000. Needs lots of work. Has 20 years worth of Arizona dust in the car.ps. I keep calling the kid "the kid" because he's 18 and I'm 27.

I PASSED SMOG!
So I ended up going to autozone and bought a foot of (I forgot the size) rubber hose, cut it down and ghetto rigged it so the hose wouldn't bend shut. It will do until I order the part from the dealer this week. Thanks for the feedback
I had to buy a car (a running car), there was only 1 other FC for sale in vegas and it was an auto (I almost bought it). The FC I ended up buying was originally listed for $3,000, then the kid dropped it to $2700, and kept going down, until he stopped at $2000 and wouldn't budge. There were no other running FC's with similar mileage with near mint body's in driving range that met my budget of $2000, so I bought a plane ticket to AZ and drove back with the car. I didn't even test drive it until after I had given him the money (not that he didn't let me or anything, I just knew I was buying the car regardless of how it drove at that point). All in all I'm happy with my purchase, I love my FC, its just the coolest car ever. sometimes.
