need help fast - acv

ok, im leaving in about 15 minutes to get my car smogged, i just fabricated some hose to hook the air pump to the cat... my question is, do i need to plug up the ACV.. i have it capped, but it would still take in some air (plugged with electrical tape over a coke top) and the other part of the question, the old line that ran to the split air pipe, does it need to be capped as well??

I'd run a hose, between the two main air ports on the ACV just to make it look connected.

and why didn't you just run the air pump to the Split air pipe??

Because he's read tooooo many posts on this site about running a straight hose to the split air pipe and like them is clueless as to what/how the acv works and or the split air pipe. humor, grim humor.

Your a little slow on the uptake, are you? I wrote that reply because the airpump should NOT be connected directly to the split air pipe. A normal RX-7 with emissions intact, does not work like that. So why would you do that??

The air from the airpump goes mostly to the exaust ports via the acv's check valve. Thats called Port Air, as described in the fsm. The Port Air is prior to the 02 sensor and the catalytic converter. The split air pipe,on a normal car/engine is NOT the main recipient of the airpump air.

In other words, why cheat when you can do it right?

There's a free download of the factory service manual. The url's are on this site under FAQ.

It might be easier to do the download in the middle of the night. Some of these sites are a bit slow. Save it to your hard drive or make a CD.

If the acv and airpump were working right, meaning the relief and theh switching solenoids were working right also, then you might start thinking about a new catalytic converter. Even one from CATCO will work wonders.

If you have a turbo car, the switching and relief diaphrams(inside the acv) seem to cook after a decade of so. They won't respond to the inputs from the relief and switching solenoids. So you want to make sure the air from the pump is not being sent overboard into the silencer in the right fender. It won't do you much good there instead of in the exaust ports.

I even did a search for 'shop manual'. Still nothing...but w/e. Maybe if you helped me find the link, instead of just repeating the same thing Hailers did...then you wouldnt look like such an ***.

Thank you Hailers.
