Need help, don't know what ecu this engine needs???
I just bought an 91 rx-7 5spd with turbo engine. Previous owner installed turbo engine in it. I bought it non-running. It looks like it has a bit of after market stuff on it. Right now it's sitting with a mechanic who is charging me $68/hr to tell me that the ecu isn't sending signal to the injectors, and that is the only problem. I have pics I am gonna try and post below of the engine. I'm hoping that someone will be able to identify which ecu the engine needs.
After the mechanic told me it needed a new ecu I got a used N374, and the car came with the N374 installed but apparantly from what I was told is that one "doesn't even function most of the electronic stuff in the car let alone the engine." which was weird..... There was also an N370 ecu that was in the car when I bought and the mechanic hooked that one up and it works and all signal is good apparently except for injectors. He told me I need to buy a new'used' N370, and I don't want to keep wasting money just to find out that when I put a new N370 that it still has the injector prob. :'( So if anyone could tell me the right ecu I would be much appreciative.
I only have one pic of the engine before the mechanic started working on the car. He took off the intercooler and did some other work with engine and wiring to get all the wiring corrected and told me he has everything working, and that once the injectors recieve signal from a working ecu the engine should fire up and keep running.
Thanks a bunch!
John

S5TII-N370 A Spec & N374 J Spec. From what I understand they are interchangeable, but have never tried a N374 in my TII.
At least this with take it back to the top. I would ask the forum about No Signal To Injectors and see what some of these electronic guru's have to say. With my limited experience in that area, I would only look a the FSM and wiring and go from there.

I wouldn't touch projects like this with a ten foot pole...
I would've gotten a maximum estimate to fix this car, or else I think the shop is milking you for money.
I guess live and learn.

The ECU puts a ground on the injector to make it operate open/close etc. If you had not outsourced the repair of your car to someone else, I'd have recommended that you check the grounds for the ECU. The grounds for the ECU are located on top of the rear rotor housing.
A couple of people on this forum have had a similar problem as yours, and traced it back to the lack of grounds for the ECU because they forgot to install the ring connector on top of the rear rotor.

I can go and take a picture of the ecu and what it looks like sitting in the car. I'm not sure if it has any grounds running to the back of the rotor housing or not. But if everything else is working on this car (relating to the ecu) and it's just the injectors that aren't getting signal, and the injectors are controlled by properly grounded from the ecu... then another used N370 ecu doesn't sound like it would help all that much. I don't know if you have a picture or drawing of what a ground from the back of the rotor housing to the ecu would look like, and where at it would be grounded. If you did that would help a bunch!
I appreciate the help!

does the harness appear to be damaged at all?????? i know some j-spec motors have pretty messed up harnesses..... im not a electronic guy by no means, but shouldnt there be power going to the injectors? anyways......... when i purchased my t2 for the swap, i had no idea that anything was wrong until i took the harness out...... inside the loom, there were wires fried, fused together..... it was shot!!! just something to check!

The harness looked kinda shady to me..... The mechanic didn't seem to think so, and he said he patched it all up so that all signals were going to right places. When I turn the key the engine turns but doesn't fire up, and when ignition on all the elctrical stuff works as it should properly work. From what I'm hearing it sounds like I'm missing an important ground but WAYNE88N/A gave me some very confusing, but useful info (more so for mechanic) about what could be going on with the car in my later posting "no signal to injectors..." I've printed out just about everything he said retaining to my prob. and I'm going to show it to the mechanic. I don't know if this will help him or confuse him as it does me. I wish I knew someone in real life that knew how to work on this specific car and model that lived near me I'm sort of at a spot right now to where I'm selling stuff to fix it up... and I don't even know if it's worth it.. or how much or how long it'll take to fix... I really want to drive this car though!!! These are sweet my friend in SB has one and it kicks @ss!!! But if I can't get this running for under $500 I wont be able to handle it... I've already invest about $2,300.00 into this car as of now.
So any an all info that retains to this would help me out more then ya know!!! I appreciate the help guys!
Thanks,
John
