NA vs Turbo II Reliability

NA vs Turbo II Reliability
One question I’ve had for a while regarding the RX-7 FC is the difference in reliability between the NA models and the Turbo II ones. Can someone tell me which is more reliable and why? Thank you!

Stock?
NA has more fragile transmission and drivetrain, but engines make less power so engine seems to last a bit longer- like 180-200,000miles.
TII has stronger transmission and driveline, but engine tends to last more like 150-180,000 miles.
Modded, NA all the way for reliability. Way too easy to make big power and big mistakes with TII.
Both are really reliable if you keep them stock and do maintenance. But what fun is that?

these cars are so old that it is almost a moot point. you will need to go through any FC and at least make sure things are working as they should be.

That’s very fair. With the anniversary edition, with few exceptions, they tend to be very well taken care of because of their rarity.

I seen one a guy was parting out that was seriously neglected when he bought it. No chance to save it. Rotted out, shredded interior. Guy basically bought it for the badges and steering wheel, even though they weren't great...Some people...

It’s so sad to hear that. I know for a fact that if I owned one I would treat it right, make sure it’s covered when I’m not driving it, premix the fuel, make sure it runs even when it’s sitting during the winter, keep it as stock as possible while doing preventative maintenance. I’d make sure to replace the oil frequently. All of that. Too bad I can’t afford one right now. I’m working as much as possible at Lowe’s right now, getting paid $13.10/hr, but with college coming up, unless someone takes pity on me, I’m going to have to work two jobs to afford it.

I would much rather buy a neglected old stock stock car than one with a loving owner that worked on it all the time.
Most of us people dont know what the F we are doing and F things up way more than we fix them. This even applies to most of us on the forum who do "reliability" mods.
Most of those reliability mods are just whack and an opportunity for us to F up a perfectly good car.
Hell I wouldnt buy a car from me...

That’s part of the reason why I want one as close to stock as possible. The other reason that I personally prefer stock cars because I think it’s more impressive to be able keep a car in a pristine stock condition. It’s almost a rarity thing, as time goes on, seeing a pristine stock car becomes more and more rare.

Look bro, I own 1 -88: GXL and 2 TII's, an 87 and the unicorn 88 10th Anniversary.
Reliability comes down to how much maintenance you are willing to put in as $$$ and time.
My NA is still stock and runs great. I beat it without any worries. The only weak link is the Trans. Has BEEN replaced twice! On the third trans but the drifting is so much fun in the NA.
For the other two, I drive them as much as I can but to be honest, the Turbos have my heart, for real. They just put a smile I my face every time I drive them!
If you are short on $$$, take the NA and learn to do what ever you want with it, race, drift, what ever, They can take a beating. It's less $$$!
If you have $$$, then I advise you take the TII. Just remember to have the car checked about from a good mechanic. These are 30+ Year cars with previous owners who have done some weird and highly questionable upgrades/downgrades to them. So educate yourself or find someone who knows these cars. Or do what most of us do, Jump in and slowly see your $$$ go to your car, year after year!

I know for a fact that I want a turbo, the sound alone on a turbo rx7 makes me smile. Converting from an NA to turbo is practically impossible too. Worst part is that most of the NA FC rx7’s in my area are selling for turbo prices (+$5k on Facebook marketplace). At that point I might as well shoot for the stars and get what I really want to
