Question N/A engine to T2 tranny?

So would it work to bolt a N/A engine to a T2 tranny bellhousing? is it direct bolt-in or are the blocks structurally different? ooh, and the clutch is different, right? so does it have a different number of splines as well?

I ask this because I want to do a N/A to T2 swap, but I want to do it slowly... ie. buy as many of the driveline parts as I can afford, swap 'em. Then build up a turbo motor (outside the car) and drive the hell outta my N/A motor. When it pops, or when I get the turbo motor done, swap it and the electrical... how does it sound?

They bolt up, however you will need to change the starter, flywheel, clutch assembly, and clutch slave and build a custom drive shaft until you swap the rear end as well.

ok here goes..
1.yes the trannys will bolt up.
2. No the t2 tranny will not fit in the N/A clutch (the spline has more teeth.
3. The t2 tranny needs the t2 drive shaft for the same reson as above.
4. The t2 driveshaft will not bolt up to the N/A diff do you will need the t2 diff.
5. As far as I know the axles are the same but I never tried it.
6. The t2 drivetrain is alot heavier and will make the car slower.

I hope this helps let me know if you have any question.

amemiya: thanks man, Thats about what I figured too.. if I do the swap it will be an entire T2 Driveline minus engine.... then I can build up the engine outside the car and swap it in when I'm good and ready ...so I guess I'll be a little slower for a while... but thats ok, I'll smoke all those ***** who pass me... when the new engine is in

The half-shafts (axles) are *NOT* the same, they are about an inch shorter on the turbo. You could use the flange from a T2 rear-end and stick it on a NA rear end and use the T2 driveshaft with an NA rear-end, or so I was told, never tried it, but they measured out the same length when I checked. And You could use an automatic driveshaft if you were really crazy, because it doesn't slide in all the way.
