Mystery button?

so when i pulled off the shifter boot/stereo surround i noticed this button/cable end... thing. if you press it in it feels like theres a cable running to *something* as there is quite a bit of resistance, but i cant tell where it goes. any ideas on what it is before i pull apart the dash trying to figure it out? pics will come soon

Hmmmm That is no way stock..

Follow the line if you can. I can only guess that maybe the previous owner had an alarm or something and used that to tell if some one yanked the stereo out.

ok, its like 8 gauge steel braided cable, its like the cable they use for the gas door opener. runs underneath the carpeting straight back underneath the air conditioner/heating ducts from what i can tell...blah guess i gotta pull the whole dash heh

The end shown in the pic wasn't attached to anything?

My truck has a cable like that coming from the back of the heater/AC panel that goes to the heater core to move something when you slide the lever back and forth. Our cars do it via electronics as far as I know.

before you take out the dash, take a look under the car, see if it pops out there kind of above the bell housing.

wow, im suprised no one thus far has given the right information. that is the auto lockout thing, only cars with automatic trans have them, it prevents the key from being removed unless the car is in park. if you have a manual trans in the car than it is not stock, someone did a 5spd swap sometime in the past and dissconnected the switch on the ignition so you can get your key out.

I was going to say that next. I help a friend do a 5spd swap and 2 days later he couldn't get the key out. Someone told him what it was but I wasn't there to see it so I didn't recognize the thing in the pic.

the shifter side that switch you're talking about looks alot like the one in the picture. It was bolted down to the tranny tunnel and would release the key only in park (farthest forward the car).

Edit: damn small forum...
