Mysterious Black Connector & Starter Grounding
Hi all!
I replaced my starter today with the Banzai high output starter and didn’t seem to find a ground wire connected to the bellhousing for the starter. After reconnecting the battery I noticed this wire coming off the pos/neg harness was empty. My chassis is an import turbo 86.
My main questions are:

My main questions are:
- Where does the main ground for the starter come from? Where could I trace back to to see if there is one?
- What is this mysterious wire? Is it the starter ground or just something missing?

the battery cables come off the battery, and then they go into the charging harness. the positive goes to the starter, the negative goes to the bell housing bolt under the oil filter.
that little grey wire is not factory, who knows where it goes and what it does

The grey wire is my sense wire for the alt, but the connector I'm referring to is the black one in that isn't connected to anything in the center of the picture. I guess it might've been helpful to circle it.

I'm pretty sure the connector you are referring to goes to the main stud on alternator or goes to the main fuse box (I can't remember which at the moment) . Who knows what was done to your car.
Your starter does not have a negative wire. The starter itself grounds to the bell housing. There should only be 2 wires to your starter. One big to the lug and one small to the little spade terminal to energize the solenoid.
