My rear-end stinks
So, my rear-end on my 86 GXL started howling last month going down the freeway. Somehow I leaked all the fluid out of my rear-end. By the time I had filled it up, the damage is done... it just keeps howling.
I'm not an RX7 master, so I'm wondering if anyone knows about RX rear-ends. I probably have toasted bearings or something.
Am I going to have to replace the whole rear-end, or can I just replace the gears?
Cost?
Is it a good time to upgrade?
I just don't want to walk into a shop and get ripped off because I haven't tore into an RX rear-end. Any advice/input would help.

it is likely that the bearings on each end fo the diff are now burned out/bad and there is a possibility that the gears are very worn from not being lubricated... whcih means they also may have cracked or be on the verge of cracking which would then destroy the entire rear end.
so... uh... find a used one and swap it in.

uhhh, don't even bother wasting your time. differentials are not an easy thing to build and once it has started howling it will be a pricey rebuild and even pricier for the novice since you will likely need extra bearings to get the differential setup properly.
my suggestion is just buy a wrecking yard differential or one off the forums, they do not fail often and are easy enough to swap in/out.
