Question My oil smells like gas...

Hello All,

I just bought my Candy Apple Red 1989 RX7... I dont know much more than it is a plain jane RX7... Well I was just trying to figure out if my oil should have a gas smell to it... I know in a piston engine it shouldn't... I used the compression "PSST" test in the FAQ section and it sounds great... It also runs great... I get an intermitent "check engine" light from time to time and it does that thing sometimes, where I start it and it dies almost immediately... I give it some gas and it is happy from that point on though... So I have rambled long enough... Any help would be great...

Welcome to the forum!

The gas smell in the oil is pretty much normal. Be sure to read the FAQ and check out the Archives, lots of good info in there.

if it starts and runs fine and the oil level is not visibly rising then i wouldn't worry about it, just do your oil changes every 3000 miles religiously.

mine smells like gas also, just be sure to change the oil regularly as gas isn't a lubricant and too high a concentration will reduce the effectiveness of the oil to lubricacte.

sounds like you have some seals to replace or you really need to change that oil

I would think it's the seals... except it's a rebuild with around ~4000miles. After around ~1500 miles, my oil was probably over a quart high the last time I changed it.

Any blue smoke ever? You should be burning about a quart every thousand miles, not a quart every 500. Just make sure you keep it topped off and you should be ok, though.

halfway between the marks is half a quart. 1 quart per 1k miles = .5 quart per 500mi.

I must have mis-interpreted it. I thought he meant half between Full and Low.
