forget what everyone said so far and tell me how you did the compression test.

Was the engine warm? What kind of guage did you use? Does the guage hold pressure or does it release it instantly? You cannot use a standard guage (w/o modifications) that holds pressure b/c it wont show accurate results for each face of the rotor. Also, you have to make sure that you get a guage that screws into your spark plug hole and make sure that it is screwed all the way in and secured. I recommend you try it agan if you said no to any of the above. How many miles on engine? Is it a rebuild or are you planning to rebuild it? Alot of people get low compression numbers on fresh rebuilds (although 80 is extra pretty dangerous and suicidal low.)

Bah, it's not that bad. Just don't go treating it like a fresh one.

They'll run, and pretty good even, with numbers in the low 70s. I know. You just can't push it all that much.

If you've got the dough and big horsepower plans then it's time for a rebuild.

All the "sky is falling" talk cracks me up.

and don't forget a full charge on the battery, preferably having a jumper battery on it to be sure the engine is turning over relatively quick. i also recommend doing the test with the throttle wide open to increase airflow into the engine.

80 on both rotors is better than the 0 and 45 on mine. Apathy and Karack hit in on the head though......

GEEEEZZzzzZZ Us man, I got another 120,000 miles out of one that (road miles mostly) had certified ratings of a couple pounds less than that...I started adding 1/2 ounce of 2 cycle oil to the gas and that seemed to help comp some....but be prepared anything can happen and maybe I was just lucky, or blessed...

An "RX7 Shop" huh? Since each rotor has three faces that would mean he should have given you numbers like 80-80-75 90-90-80 with each number representing a rotor face. If this guy specializes in rotarys you must have misunderstood, either that or he doesn`t have a clue. Maybe ha has a Mazda comp tester and all three faces on each rotor came out at 8.0?
Sorry just talkin out my ***

If the test was done with a piston engine comp tester and 80 and 80 means each rotor has 80psi on each face then you really are getting into the rebuild area. At least what i`ve read here anything below 90 psi is getting pretty weak. usually motors that tired will have a tendency to flood, especially when trying to start a warm motor.

The Mazda rotary engine comp tester gives readings such as 8.0 for each rotor face.
Is it possible the mechanic meant 8.0 instead of 80?

its also possible that the mechanic didn't wanted to put it as simply as possible to get the point accross. From my experience, each face is a bit lower than the total (which is prob what he gave you) so maybe 75-80 per face. As long as the numbers are pretty even then its not a death sentance to the engine, but its def getting on up there. It could last a year, it could last a week. Either way, start saving for a rebuild and go easy on the engine.

I know the mechanic he went to. I can vouch that he knows his ****. There had to be some misunderstanding on the customer side.

his tester may read slightly lower, there is many variables when doing the test with a piston compression tester, if you trust his work then i would just trust his word that those numbers are still "ok"

If you rebuild it now...its going to cost less to rebuild then if you drive it till it blows...
