Msd???

okay, so I know what it is and what it does, but do I want one?
what kind of performance gains am I looking at, what are the drawbacks?

I would realy like to hear some personal experiences.

thanks.

Yes. It is a CDI box, and does the same thing as a Crane HI-6 box, only it is analog and not digital so it is a little cheaper.
I have heard stories that they fail easier, but have not had confirmation.
They may add a little horsepower, but mostly they smooth out the top end and add a couple mpg to your driving.
Should pay for itself in about a year.
I run the HI-6, and prefer it b/c it is digital.

Sean,
What mods did you have when you added the Hi-6?

For the price, it won't do much.
For me, I wish I got a used one, but I did notice a difference.
I don't know if it made any more power, but the midrange is definately smoother- that's without a doubt, and maybe a bit more punch in the midrange, but I don't know about max HP.
I noticed more smoothness by replacing the plug wires with MSD 8.5mm.
More so than the box.

Not very much.
E-fan, wires (w/ new plugs), 3" downpipe, and an intake, fuel pump rewire I think.

if you put it on the trailing it will increese high end horse power, in the leading it will smooth idle and increese gas milage. get the dis digital that is out. I have the 6al I like it you need it when HP starts getting up there. use a colder plug also.

What???
I have never heard of putting a CDI box on the trailing plugs, I beleive it's just a waste.. considering the car will basically run OK without trailing plugs at all!

Also- the new digital DIS apparently WON'T work on the RX-7- A few guys here have learned that the hard way!
Kindof sucks.

Apparently GMonsen has the msd dig plus for the leading, and msd dis2 for the trailing. I've read good reviews from him.

you have to use two for the trailing coils and one for the leading. that is a total of three. for just a little more money you could have the Jacobs system. the jacobs does make more power and gets higher fuel economy.
I have the MSD. when I bought the system, Jacobs had not finished their testing on the rotory pac system. I wish I would ahve waited. call jacobs and talk to them. they will tell you. so will the guys at mazda motor sports and racing beat.

I am using 2 Crane Hi-6 units each firing it's own LX-92 CD-Only coil on the LEADING ignition, stock ignition on the trailing on my 87 TII. My experience with this setup is a smoother idle, more torque on the low end, much more responsive (stumble at lower RPM completely disappeared), and a definite increase in high end, both horsepower and rpm (it seems like it would make usable horsepower to 9000 rpm if the ECU let it). In short, whatever CDI system you use, if you use the stock coil, you are not going to get great results imho. Oh yes, and one more thing - the Jacobs system is a CDI unit, no matter how many fancy names they add to it (Pro Pak etc.). Ask 'em!
