Maximum Hole Diameter for Intake System

Hello,

I've seen many people do the whole Prelude CAI. In this process they usually cut out a circle, maybe about 3" in diameter?

I was curious about how big can a hole be cut into this area while maintaining it's structural properties?

The prelude piping is 3". You need to cut a hole 3.5" or bigger, to be able to fit some kind of rubber around the hole, and the pipe thru.

I'm not using the prelude kit however, I should have clarified.

I have something else in mind which will need about a 6" diameter hole. I just am not sure if this is too big for that area while keeping the strength that area requires.

Well, I suppose it won't hurt it anymore than the inital 3" cut.

I'll post once it's all said and done.

Nothing spectacular or overly exciting, but i just need a bigger hole for this little project.

The only thing I could think of..is that he is using one of those huge filters, and wants it to be barely sticking down. This would reduce piping length, and would make it less susceptible to inclimate weather..

I want to use aluminum tubing like usual CAI's, and then instead of an airbox I will be using a BMC CDA (carbon dynamic airbox) kit. I have to check height measurements, and if there isn't enough room to use without such a big hole, I would have to cut out the diameter required for the BMC CDA kit to slide down somewhat, and then have a bit of tubing with an elbow after the CDA to take in the air...

Why would you need a box? With a CAI, the intake goes out of the engine bay, eliminating the need for a box at all...

I don't want the heat of the engine bay, nor do I want the filter low enough to get away from the heat due to debris,water,etc...

I find this solution to be a neat interesting medium of the things I want to achieve.
