If you can get the clutch type like you had originally the engagement is much much faster than the fluid type.
The other swapable part is apparently the Torsen diff from a Miata.
The only advantage to using a fluid type LSD is they don't wear out. However if you use the wrong gear oil it will destroy the Fluid type.

Are those only on certain year or model Miata's? Or, do all Miata's have Torsion rear diffs.
I know nothing about those cute lil thangs. Icemark, you out there still?
I assume to take advantage of Torsion in my Vert, it's a pumpkin swap exercise. I'm assuming the rear diff housings and mounts are different.
Right, wrong?

I have also heard that the there was one edition of the miata that cam with a six speed tranny that will bolt to the rotors. I think it was some (last ten years) anaversary edition that was special order but they made plenty of them so you can find them in the yards sometimes

The torsion diffs in the Miata were offered from '94 to present.
Interchange guide (from the other side of the fence) can be found here: http://members.aol.com/solomiata//MiataVLSD.html
The torsional diff can easily support 300hp.
The 6 speed tranny can be ordered from Mazda for $$$$. If you managed to bolt it in, you'd need a 3.90 rear to avoid having really short gears.

Yes the Torsen diffs are on some models from 94 on. M editions and a few others.
They handle up to about 300 Hp- or 275 Ft/lbs
I hadn't heard about the six speed bolt up. I'll ask around my Miata buddies and see if anyone knows.
The six speed was only available from about 98 (99 model year) and up

75% of all Miatas produced from 94-97 have LSD

'95, '96, & '97 - if it's a 5sp and it's has a power antenna, then it's got an LSD (no relation between the 2 features, just the easiest way to tell).
Automatics are all open diff.
The only other M1 with an LSD would be the R package. This model can be distiguished by bilstein shock absorbers, rear spoiler, front air dam, and rear skirt. The shocks are yellow. R packages are rare (1841 produced over 4 model years) and would be considered the Miata equivalent of the GTUs.

this is great stuff!! i cant wait to find a miata 6 speed! will the whole tranny bolt up, or will we have to switch the internals of the gear box out? and then along w/ that, would we use the stock driveshaft to bolt to the miata rear end? or swap internals on that part too? i know little about drive trains.
hey i want one of those. maybe i can get in my truck and find a miata to run over. then i will steal his whole tranny and diff
