low boost (yup another thread)

So im tired of reading thru search posts so im going to post it here.

Car Specs:
Rtek 1.7, downpipe, no cats, apexi n1 exhaust. greddy FMIC. HKS BOV. 550 primaries/680 secondaries (i didnt do it). Emissions all removed.

No boost leaks, ive pressure tested the engine and it holds.

Car boosts to 5psi with the wastegate plugged into a source. (Same source as the boost sensor and aftermarket guage).

I unplug the sensor and cap the line, it boosts well beyond that (i get out of the gas before she blows).

Any thoughts?

So you're seeing 5psi of boost on what is roughly a 5.5psi spring, then seeing much more boost when you unplug the line to the wastegate. I don't see any problem with that. It's what you'd expect.

Well, yeah. Stock is ~5-6 psi. Before cranking the boost level up, be sure you have something better than the stock fuel pump as well.

boost controller my friend. when i first got my car, similar setup to yours, but somethign was off, i was seeing almost 1 bar boost.. then i must have did something and now see stock boost. so yeah cant really expect to see more boost because of the exhaust/intake, tho i remember reading somewhere that it typically does raise it. I dunno.

you got a fmic with stock turbo, lemme know how it works out for you with upping the boost.

Oh, you would be surprised how many people kill their engine with the stock pump.

Doubling the boost level yields some huge power gains. It's lots more fun than stock. But I wouldn't continue driving it with the wastegate line off. You can easily creep up to 15-20 psi, send the intake temps way up, and pop the engine. The rtek 1.7, walbro & FMIC won't save it at that point. The stock turbo becomes wildly inefficient at excessive boost levels.
