Tranny dissasemby required. Sounds as tho a keeper on am internal shift rod is broke, or slipped out. Thats why first and second will work, but the others are gone. You can break open the case yourself, and once you have it apart, you will be able to see which rod isn't doing what its supposed to. It's not rocket science. After you have the rods doing what they are supposed to do, a light film of rtv(blue) and then back together. But for sure, if its fubared, what do you have to lose by opening it up. You may find its easier than you thaught.

The trick is pulling the internal 5th/rev selector rod out of reverse.
You may be able to select 4th, force the shift lever against Rev & pull them both out together.

Check out the transmission section of the FSM.

Even if it is fubar'ed, the transmission is pretty easy to replace, and used N/A transmissions only go for about $100.

Been there, done that.

Yeah man just snag a tranny from someone on the forum. I've seen them for closer to $200, but thats not bad. I can drop the old one and put a new one in in a matter of hours.

Same issue,someone help!!!

Hi everyone,

My tranny just went or so I think it did and im having the same issue as dezerte. I was at a stop light and heard an unusual ping and the car wouldnt go anywhere. It was just stuck.......like the other guy, when I put it in neutral it went in reverse, goes to 2nd but does nothing....wont go in 3rd 4th, or 5th.

I dont know to much about trannies so whats all this about the linkage can some one explain this or will it matter................probably wont since I have another tranny.

my second part is that I do have an 87 parts car with a good tranny, I guess that will fit according to what I read in one of the other threads, but what the heck is a crossbar thing is what somecalled it.

Can someone out ther offer some good advice, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

my 90 had the same problem. i think i need a new transmission anyway because my shifter is extremely loose. it is almost like you can spell your mane out in cursive with the shifter when it is in neutral. my tranny also had the same problems as "M2launch" and "nmyeyez". does anyone have a suggestion or an answer to what the problem is with the shifter and if it can easily be fixed? is it the tranny or is is something simple? and what is necessary for fixing the linkage in the tranny? any help would be very appreciated.
