Loose Stick

when i first bought my car i noticed that the stick was loose. i can't really figure out why and i've had some people look at it. some tell me it's transmission others tell me it's the clutch or link in the transmission, i can't trust some mechanics because they always try to tell me something is wrong with my car because of the fact that if they do, do rotaries then they'll make more money. i don't really know a lot of fc drivers right now in san diego. the stick literally can move around the whole gear box freely in nutural and wont pop out of gear. while in gear it stays there but it's easy to pop out and sometime it wont even go into gear at all. any help guys? i've tried looking for similar problems on the site and if i missed anything then sorry for the repost.

it sounds like you need some shifter bushings. go to mazdatrix.com and get some.

it might be the pressure plate. does the clutch peddle go to the floor or does it feel normal? i had similar prob i ended up changing the clutch assembly and then the slave and mastercylinder. i know this sounds dumb but have you checked the clutch fluid...oh another thing the shifter bushings...idk if that will have anything to do with it but hey worth a try. i hope i was of some help.!

rx7.com has a short shifter with all the stuff to install it including the shifter bushings...it take litteraly like 20mins to install the price is $195.00 plus shiping

The looseness is bad shifter bushings, easy and cheap top replace. After that, see what the shifting is like.

go to www.mazdatrix.com...the bushings (upper and lower) add up to just around $20 USD, and they have a writeup on how to do it yourself w/pics. Where I live in Los Angeles, I tried taking it to a "rotary shop" (anyone in the area...do not go to Salazar Miata repar, they used to work on rotaries, but they rip you off and it's well worth the drive to mazdatrix and racing beat), and they were going to charge $400 USD for the job.

+1 shifter bushings.

Basically they're just a cutout that keeps the shifter where it's supposed to go. Imagine something with slots shaped like this:

|-|-|

Now without that, your stick can go all over the place. And if you accidentally move it in between two of the gears, it won't go in gear even if you push hard.

There is so much more to the shifter than just those 2 halfs of the upper shift bushing. Mine are good but I have other problems. The shifter bushing that fits in the groove was broken off and missing (Mazdatrix #17-5150-M501). This allows shifter to twist or rotate about 30 degrees. I also have problems with parts in the extension housing. Possibly the transmission shift control/control rod end (Mazdatrix #17-46Y0-M510) or the roll pin that holds it. I am currently searching the forums to see what I can do to fix this issue and whether it can be fixed on or off of the car. I took the shifter out of the car and sucked up the gear oil. Both of the return springs work but I could see that the control rod end could rotate back and forth before it encountered the springs.

Ernest at RX-7 World said that some of the parts do require removal of the transmission.

i guess i can look into the bushings, it's not the slave cylinder or the master cylinder i already replaced those because my pedal was stuck to the floor. if it only costs 20 dollars then i'll buy them. i'll go head and like get a video of what i'm talking about when there is some daylight outside. like literally when i'm in neutral i can spin the damn thing around like i'm in gear but i'm not and when i'm in gear i can easily have it ready to shift into second by having the stick in the direction i want it to go. all i have to do is step on the clutch and i'm already in second. i was wondering if this also has something to do with my idling... my car sometimes wont idle properly even if i let it warm up for a minute or a minute and a half.

i can almost say with a 90% that its the bushing, i was having the same problem, it was extremely sloppy, and i had to go all over the place in crazy directions to get it into gears, from first to second, i had to go diagnally to fourth and then cut to second, third and fourth were ok, but fifth, i was hitting the radio to get it into gear. i can almost guarantee you its the bushing.

i took mine out to replace it with the mazdatrix short throw(which i might add is very very nice) and the bushing was non existant, when it was replaced, i was shifting so smoothly it was a world of a difference, remember, you never know when that thing was last replaced, it could be the original one from the factory.

Start with the bushings, check your boots and other stuff down there to see if they need to be replaced. On my Vert even with replaced bushings and a new short shifter mine is still a little floppy. The centering springs is missing and I suppose the orig owner wallowed it out some.

I bought a shift boot from Advance for $11 to replace the middle shift boot. I read about someone on the forum using it and it seemed to work well and several people followed his example. Saving $50 on the middle boot is a definite plus. It is called the Daytona shift boot and is made by Mr. Gasket. Pepboys had a similar one also. I had to go to 3 Advances to find one in stock though; maybe just my luck though.

Here is a link to the thread.

man i'm so bad at **** like that though... i'd rather not break my car. at least if i have someone who has already done it, it makes it easier on me. i can watch the person do it and already know how. i'm a visual learner so i only need to see something a few times before i know how to do it.

+eleventy on the bushings. And it is realitivly easy to do yourself. This link is from the Mazdatrix shortshifter install, but you can see what it would take to change the bushings.
