leaky vert?

Does anyone now if the verts leaked when they were brand new? I have replaced the top recently and all of my seals look good, but I be damned it still leaks. Looks to leaking right where the top of the door sill meets the targa.

Of course when I spray it with the hose, it doesn't leak. It only seems to leak when there is a bad Tstorm.

Some do under real heavy wind and rain combined.

I had a similar issue with my 88-- seals looked OK. Ordered 2 new ones and that seems to have helped me. The other thing is maybe the window needs some adjusting-- it looks like there are stops in the door to adjust the proper hight when closed-- maybe that would help.

Good Luck,

Greg O.

GET pors15! im not sure if thats how its spelled. but its a glue that will restore your rummber. my driver side door had a leak where the rubber met the window. i used this stuff waited for it to dry to where it would take my finger print then added another coat. it worked magic!

por15 is a paint used to stop rust, but it does dry into a rubbery substance... might work, but be careful, you don't want to get that crap on your interior or paint at all.
My top leaks too right where you all are talking about. oh the life of owning a vert

There are two drains at the points where the top meets the top of the rear door posts. The top is slightly open (about 3 ") between the top and the body at this point. There are plastic tubes that carry the drainage to release under the car.
If these plug up the water has no place to drain except into the car. The drains are accessable by removing the spare tire cover. I live in Florida where it pours rain. My 89 Convertable is bone dry.

of 3 convertibles I have had that came from original owners with all service records, YES they leaked even when new.

every service ticket started out with "check leaking top"

I had good luck closing the drivers door with the window a little down, then from the other side of the car roll it up, seems to make the top molding seal better.

I would get a big puddle behind the drivers seat, I lifted the carpet, removed the padding, and drilled a small hole figuring if water got in it would drain instead of pooling there.

Now I garage the car so things are better, but otherwise these cars suck to daily drive with leaky tops, factor in freezing temperatures and I would have frost INSIDE the car, lol

I have no problem with a leaky top but I live in so cal and rain isn't an everyday thing. And I check every once and a while and make sure my drains aren't clogged.

ya wanna know what RX7s are? nothing more than god playing with a spirograph and when you get a vert he starts laughing even more...

the main leak i have is in the pouch the the water runs into. my passenger side has a hole in the pouch and i cant quite get to it b/c the motor mounts for the top.
im trying everything before i buy a new top cuz i dont have $300 to get a new one or the $300 to get it put on.

but yea pors15 is a double edged sword. its works amazing and will hld anything to everything, but its expensive, kinda. and if you get it on your hands..well dont...
but im gettin another can and fixing my leaks.
im trying a kinda run-off by-pass for my car.

I think you are referring to the top of the front edge of the door just at the junction of the targa and the windshield pillar?

There is a trim 'cup' that is molded into the door weatherstripping. This cup is designed to catch the drips in this location and drain them down the middle of the door weatherstripping to the ground. The cup is triangular about 2-3" long and about 3/4" wide. If the drain cup is not properly tucked and glued in place, the water will drip out of the cup instead of drain down the channel. The top edge must be tucked in place under the adjoining trim and the edge along the windshield pillar must be glued in place.

When I bought my '90 vert this cup was a little floppy; I would occasionally tuck it into the correct place, but I would later bump it loose entering and exiting the car. Water dripped from this point in nearly all kinds of rain, when I was driving or parked. Once I correctly secured (glued) the cup in the precise place it belongs, most of my drips and leaking issues went down the drain...I consider my '90 Vert to be substantially a dry all-weather car.

One caution with a suggestion: If I leave my car outside and it gets rained on, the car stays dry. If however the vert gets a thunderstorm with strong wind driven rain, the car gets damp to wet inside. So does my Wife's Celica Vert. This may just be the reality of vert ownership. I bought a car cover and I use it when parked outside and weather is coming in.

Good luck!
