Key stuck

I can not get my key out of my car. The car was an auto at one point of time. Dose any ideas of things to try?

Maybe your steering lock is the problem. Move the steering wheel back and forth while pulling on the key.

Did you try to push the key in & rotate backwards then pull out?

I have only had this problem for 2 weeks. I have had the key in and out of the ignition before. I know how to operate it.

Are U sure? Did you try & move the steering wheel side to side to un-bind it? Try massaging the key on a horizontal plane while moving the steering wheel back & forth. Does the key move to the off position? Did you try some Lube? Did you jam the wrong key in it?

I had that same key in and out the day it got stuck. I have driven the car after the key got stuck so it is NOT caused by the steering. It is NOT something stupid like that. I can put the key in the off, run, and start positions.

The only thing i can think of is the car at one point of time had an automatic transmission. Automatic cars have a key lock if the car is not in park. But i do not know how to check for this or fix this. That is why i am asking if any one knows what to do.

Are you turning the Key to the OFF position?..When I first got an RX7,I kept leaving it On ACCESSORY..Maybe that is It?..another is what Ramses said.Push and turn, then pull..Just for the Hell of it also, check to see if there is a Safety interlock switch on the Steering column. It would be a Button to release the Key on the ignition(just guessin on that one.).

There are four key positions not three - Lock - Accessory - Run and Start if you can't get to lock position you can't get it out obviously. Don't ASSUME anything because you've been messing with it. Push it in & rotate back while moving the wheel & jiggling the key.

Now, don't get all pissy, everyone is trying to help. You haven't given enough information except that you have a theory that it is the automatic to manual swap that is at the heart of your problem. I think that once you have the cable out, the mechanism is disabled. You could check the FSM easier than you can spank everyone trying to help you.

When you figure out how to take a key out of the lock, will you admit it is user error?

Good Luck

edit: This is starting to remind me of the posts "I can't get my headlights down"

Ok... it won't push in... you could have SAID it won't push in. Perhaps you need a new ignition cylinder/switch. I think you need a time out...hahahah.. sorry. I know how frustrating these cars can be. Squirt some wd-40 in there.

you just answered your own question. the reason why the key can't come out is because of the safety mechanism from the park sensor. i have done auto to manuals in other cars and you have to make sure the old automatic shifter console is locked into "park" position in order for you to remove the key. i'm not sure how you went about removing the auto shifter but you can connect the wires leading to the park position on the shifter base. it looks like a circuit board with a slider in it. now look at the harness that leads to the shifter, there are some wires going into it. find the colors that are closest to park position, cut them from the shifter assy and connect them together. if that doesn't work maybe your key cylinder is fubared.

I dont mind the suggestion, but repeating it over and over again is insulting. As a said 3 posts ago, i have driven the car before. If i have had the key in and out a few times before, and feel the need to post asking for help, wouldn't you think it would be more complicated of a problem then jiggle the wheel abit, push in the key in and twist, or hit a key release button.

did you do the auto to manual yourself? if so look at the shifter assy, maybe the slider thing moved slightly out of park position causing the intermittent key getting stuck. the car is thinking you aren't fully engaged in park. hope this helps, good luck.

Yeah... what he said... Take the covers off & look & see if there is some apparatus holding you up. Sounds like you could've figured this out yourself, but I know sometimes its easier to vent online... not a problem for us... been there & done that myself... its easy to overlook the obvious.... good luck!!

My car is an auto to manual swap, and my ignition cylinder does not push in, it only turns.

I remember getting another FC key stuck in another FC's ignition, if yours does push in for whatever reason, try pushing in the cylinder with another object while turning the key with your other hand (all at the same time).
