just a quick tmic qustion

i was just wondering, seeing as how the wrx and fc are both tmic, is there anyway to mount an STI tmic on a turbo II ? reason asking they sell a butt load of those on ebay at a pretty nice price

You can do anything with time and money.

Im sure you would need to fabricate a mounting bracket that mates the stock FC locations to the Stupidscrews TMIC mounts. Again, time and money. Your best bed would be to try and find a stock WRX IC and see how far off and how hard it could be to fab that up.

The other problem, is that the Wrex IC has 2 outlets that bolt directly to the intake manifold. You would need to fabricate adapter plates that allow BOTH outlets to a single IC pipe to the TB of the FC. It would need to be at least 2-3 inches higher then the stock IC to allow this, unless you flip it.

Look at this one on Ebay and you will see what Im talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/JJR-TOP-MOUNT-UP...QQcmdZViewItem

I have spent lesst then 400 bucks on several FMIC setups for various turboed cars I have owned. Granted, I was running Milled steel or aluminized steel for piping and its not that expensive to get at any NAPA store. All ya gotta do it clean it up good and paint them with high temp or rim paint. The IC, you could get off ebay for roughly 150-175 bucks.

Again though, your lookin at doing the Fab work. Ask around some local shops for prices on doing the welding for ya.

Does it hurt to take the cover off the stock tmic? The little aluminum colored one that says intercooled or whatever?

Well that aluminum peice is what creates the seal with the hood scoop, so i imagine you would get slightly less flow through the IC with it removed.

correct me if im wrong, but i think ive seen some people on here who have removed it, and they werent just some noobs either. If there isnt a seal do you really think it would cause a big difference?

I dunno. But that aluminum piece IS what contacts the rubber seal. Why would you want to remove it anyway? Looks?

I would recommend sticking wtih the stock TMIC because it mates up perfectly with the hood scoop. And I'm sure the WRX IC has no gains over the stock TMIC. Both are going to heatsoak! If anything go front mount and actually spend your time wisely.

^ yes sealing with the hoodscoop would seem to be more important than having a slightly larger core in the same inefficient location

If you really don't want to go front mount, there are aftermarket TMICs for the FC. I believe there is an old school Amemiya one, an HKS one and ARC still offers one IIRC...but, for the $$ you may as well go FMIC....unless you decide to run some type of alcohol injection...

Its not so much that the core itself sucks, but its location sure does. The only thing the stock tmic is good for is around 10 psi on the stock turbo. Anything more than that I would go with a FMIC. Then again, many people run into cooling problems when the go front mount so I guess it is a battle any way you slice it. You may want to try and relocate the tmic core in a front mount position if you are using the stock turbo. It will get much better air flow and not block much of the radiator.
