just installed new clutch/flywheel/pressure plate-wont shift when running-help!

Hi, new member here, hoping someone can help.

I have a 1987 rx-7 non turbo base model. I just installed a new Racing Beat street/strip clutch, street/strip pressure plate, a light weight steel flywheel and throwout bearing. Finished putting everything back together thinking everything would work just fine-didn't even have any left over nuts and bolts- started motor, still runs good, tried to shift and it won't go into gear. Oops, forgot to bleed the clutch master-ok done, still won't shift into gear. WHY!!! was there some inportant step I didn't do or know about? The clutch pedal has good feel, except that it has to go to the very bottom for the car to start-it did this before too-one of the reasons why I thought the clutch needed to be replaced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any chance that you installed the clutch disk with the wrong side facing the flywheel?

It worked before I changed the clutch and it didn't look bent when I replaced the throwout bearing. Thanks.

i had a simular problem. it would shift with the car not running but the car wouldnt shift out of nuetral. then if i started the car in gear with the clutch pressed to the floor. the car would lunge forward. turns out that the release spring in the pressure plate was getting hung up on the flywheel. i had to ground down a small part of the flywheel in 3 places to get the clutch to engage and dissengage with out binding up .. ,, although i didnt have a rb flywheel.. i had a SR motorsports flywheel

edit after re reading your post i would do the following ,, adjust the piston on your clutch pedal. might just not be disengaging the clutch all the way.. and if that doesnt work i would check the hyrodlics. the stock hydrolics have quite a few years on them and might not be strong enough to push a upgrade PP.. i would try adjusting the pedal first and see what that gets you .. Although ,., if you didnt open the bleeder on the slave ,, you shouldnt have had to bleed it even if you changed your clutch ... you should be able to squeeze it back with your fingers and it should be ready to go. the only time you wanna crack the bleeder is if you run low on fluid and you suck air. or you change a part of the hydrolics

IS this the same RB flywheel that uses the 6 small aluminum spacers between the pressureplate and flywheel? Did you install those 6 spacers?

I think RB flywheels suck because of this design requirement...and the lack of 3 alignment dowels for the PP, which open the door for vibrations.

And Sr flywheels are nice, but they suck too, because if you don't grind down those 3 spots (that alwayssideways speaks of) you'll be taking it back apart...they should alter their design to accomodate this.

Thanks alwayssideways, i'll try to adjust the pedal and see if that helps-I didn't open the bleeder on the slave, but when it didn't shift thats the first thing I tried. I'd like to try some other fixes before I have to take everything all apart again. Do they have stonger slave cylinders available for a upgraded pressure plate?

Thanks rotaryressurection, yes i did install the 6 spacers.
