Just bought a TII (some problems)

Ok, well I just bought a TII, and on my way home, I stopped to fill up on gas, premium(u guys use it??), I go to start it back up, no luck, so I get my friend tog et out and push, then I drop the clutch and give it gas, it starts up fine, then next morning, I get to school, I want to show it off to some friends, about 15 minutes after I shut it off, no luck, so I just left it for a bit, and came back during 3rd period and it started, no real problems since then, I also drove it around last night and it started fine after I stopped to fill up on gas. When I start it, it takes a little bit to start it up, the car has a fuel cut switch, why? I don't know. I am thinking that is the problem, and gas is not getting to the engine... maybe I am wrong... that's why I am asking you guys. -- the starter turns over fine, it's not the alternator, it's not the battery, I am guessing it's that little fuel cut off switch, or maybe new sparkplugs, though the guy I bought it from just got a check up done on it, at Rx-7 Specialites in Calgary... said it was all fine.

On another note, the car idles at like 1500... kinda high... not even after it warms up does the idle go down... any suggestions? These two problems are probably related...

So it floods. Thats what the fuel cut switch is for. So right before you shut the car off flip the fuel switch off and turn the car off, or you can just let it die. Problem solved.

Rx7Nub,

when you go to turn off the car... make sure you idle it for 1 to 2 minutes if u've been driving hard... to let oil circ through the turbo to cool it down.

When you actually do turn of the car... let it idle and flick the switch... the engine will die in a couple of seconds.

Then just pull the key out.

btw if u go to start the car and then move it down your drive way and then shut it off... u will automatically flood your engine... the ECU will start up in warm up mode, the ECU will make the car run with more gas then required to warm up engine.

So if you have to move it from parking space to parking space... drive around the block to let the temp gauge move up a bit before you park it again

Experts, what causes the car to flood? Mine used to do this bad, but not so much any more.

If it happened, I just pulled the EGI fuses, unflooded and it started...

Causes:
Leaky Injectors: Most common
Bad Warm Up Glitch Problem, ie: moving car from to driveway to street.
Bad ECU: ECU sending signal to let the injectors shoot when they shouldnt be. (happned to me)

thats what it sounds like leaky injectors. put some new plugs in that bad boy and keep usin that cutoff switch.

there's also a diode in the ECU that may burn out i believe... and if that happens your car tends to flood. I think icemark knows the answer... care to chime in icemark?

I believe low compression is also a cause.

Main cuases are bad ECU programming and Leaky injectors.

Rare cases it can be caused by low compression.

On startup, keep the fuel cutoff switch off until it fires and then flick the switch. Mine does the same thing. New engine, injectors etc.

It is an 87 TII, bought for $5500 CND, rebult engine last summer, around 30k on engine... she runs fairly good for me, but it needs new exhaust bad.. there's like ..holes.. in the exhaust... and when I go past like 140-150 I start getting like a little puffing noise, and the car kinda bounces back, I lose alot of acceleration with that, you guys all agree with me it's the exhaust? Or would it be something else..

man my '90 TurboII has only flooded once in the half a year I've had it, and that was because my father in law drove it from Cleveland to north of Detroit and then parked it, then I think he started it up and moved it without warming it up. I've never seen it flood ever on my own.

Its actually a transister, rather than diode.

in 90% of the cases flooding will be caused be one of two things. Either low compression, or leaky injectors.

It used to be very common to have the dealer recommend removing and professionally cleaning the injectors every 60K miles, but with the age of our cars, no one often does it (along with changing the fuel filter and draining/cleaning the fuel tank every 30K miles).

I a few rare cases, it is indeed a transistor in the ECU.

It is not bad ECU programing or (as covered in countless threads) the problem would happen when the cars were new and under 30K miles.

If its flooding the first thing to do is instead of micky mousing it with a fuel kill switch is to have the injectors professionally cleaned and clean out the fuel system so they don't get gunked up again

I agree with IM.

If the TII had a hot start problem from the factory, they would have a built-in kill witch. Its just a remedy, not the cure.
