J-Porting

Yes, I searched.

Now that I've settled that, here's what I'm thinking.

I have an oil leak and I was planning on rebuilding my engine anyway, so I've been looking into street porting or... possibly, j-porting.

(Street and J-Porting as defined by this site: http://www.turborx7.com/portingpictures.htm )

My FC is N/A and I'm looking to give it a little more power.

Has anyone J-ported their RX-7 around here? Will that make my RPMs at idle go nuts? Should I even bother street porting?

I figure if I have to rebuild my engine to fix a leak anyway, I might as well do some modding while everything's out and easy to get to

Thumbs up

If you're gonna drive the car on the street alot, definitely street port. Even with a street port and header my car is extremely loud. J port would definitely raise you're Idle and would also be too loud for the street.

bridgeports are barely streetable. did you read how long a J-ported motor lasts? Street, or at most bridge port. I recommend street port, but I'll be 1/3 bridgeporting my motor at some point.

Why not just fix the oil leak, and save up in the meantime to get a daily driver and eventually to build your holy grail of all engines?

OK, now pardon my ignorance. My RX is my FIRST car. So I'm learning on a rotary... everything I know about cars I know from either these boards or my friend who repairs mustangs. I know very little about piston engines and just a little more about my rotary engine. That being said... I ask,

What involved in porting makes the car louder?

far from technical but
bigger port = more flow
more flow = more noise

pretty much anything that will make yr car faster will make it noisier

did you READ the link you posted?

Extend port (large street port)
CON'S: Increase of fuel consumption and noise and the need for modified intake and exhaust systems to maximise power.
Bridge port
CON'S: Poor drivability, fuel consumption and excessive noise
J-port/Monster Port
CON'S: Short life-span, 6-12 months / 5,000-10,000km, narrow power band, need for free-flowing/loud exhaust system, poor drivability

Yeah but I was curious as to exactly what makes it noisier... is it just more air flow like 0x000FF said or what?

A J-port should be considered a race-only engine. Race car owners are happy to rebuild their engine at least once a season, but why would you want to do that to a street car engine? Even a PP would last much longer (not that I'm suggesting that). If you really want that much power, go turbo. Otherwise you should lower your performance expectations a bit.

Are you prepared to go $$$'s for carbs or stand-alone EMS + ITB intake set-up?

J-ports were basically invented to get around rules that ban peripheral porting. Engine life is very short in general. Normal failure is coolant leaking into the engine. It's a very unreliable port.

If you want to make a crazy NA engine (and have the resources to do so...as Ted mentioned, standalone is a must) then look at either full bridge or peripheral. Both can be very reliable as long as you don't cut the bridge too thin or rev the **** out of it.

If you take a tube 4" wide , and 6' long, and yell through it... and then take the same tube, but have it pinch down to 1" in the middle, and yell through it... one will be louder out the other end. Also you generally need a louder exhaust to afford the flow.

I have a racing beat exhaust, would this accomodate a mild street port well?

It seems like you can get pretty good power out of a street port, I would just stick with that.

Not to be OT, but how do you go about speeding for Jesus? I like cars and driving fast too, but it seems that it doesn't have much to do Jesus and I can't say I 'honor the father' with my driving habits lol.
