Irons Question

Is it ok to take some stealwool to the face of the irons? Just wanted to lightly polish them a bit before I put it all back together. If all goes well that will be this weekend.

3M pad is best. Frankly, I doubt that steel whool would do anything at all put put in a few fine scratches. The surfaces of the irons are VERY hard nitrated steel. If there is slight surface rust, just a rough cloth and brake cleaner should do. If it's slightly deeper, then fine grade sandpaper (600 grit).

thanks guys,

No rust, just a little dark in areas. I just got them back from the Head shop today, sent them in to have all the water passages etc, cleaned. They put them through a heated cleaner, and got all the gasket off. I was just curious about the faces. I got all my parts now, and hope all goes well putting this thing back together. I have the manual and the video, so maybe it will all turn out ok.

The black staining is from the nitriding process.

Its normal.
